So I'm in the process of trying to diagnose a problem with my TL2300. I started to loose power and heard an increase in engine noise after about 2 hours of bush hogging. There was brown foam residue in the radiator and the coolant was brown and kinda oily. I figure it's a blown head gasket and have started tearing the tractor down. So far it seems I have torn half the tractor apart just to get to the point where I can access the top of the engine. Anyone else done this and have any advice or recommendations? 3 cylinder diesel 4 wheel drive.

The motors are tough as nails but the head gasket is the weak link.

I havn't torn into the top of the motor yet. I was hearing a definite squeaking from what I expect was the water pump and figured I'd replace that while I'm at it. I don't know why that would cause a loss of power and the engine temp didn't seem to be abnormal. The engine still started up but even after letting it rest and restarting the loss of power came back after only running for about 10 minutes or less.
So I took off the head and there was evidence of soot deposit between 2 of the cylinders. The head gasket looked fine but once again some evidence of blow between cylinders. I'm guessing the head is slightly warped but can't really tell. I was hoping it was a faulty head gasket. So ---onward I go.

What do you mean with 'loss of power'? Is this the engine or the hydraulics?
The squeaking noise (when operating hydraulics) in my experience is most likely your oil filter being blocked. Bad news is that to check the oil filter you have to take out the oil.
This is the engine I'm talking about, hydraulics are fine. I've ordered a new head gasket, water pump, thermostat and filters. I'm still not sure about the head, I hate to have it machined if it doesn't need to be but I'm thinking better safe than sorry.

If a minor warpage the head should only need a few thousandths of an inch milled off. As you said, better safe than sorry.

Thanks Shovelmike, It's off so I figure I will have it milled, I also discovered a bolt missing when I removed the intake exhaust manifold. Considering that the kill engine mechanism is to release pressure on the air intake I'm wondering if this might be a contributing factor in my loss of power as the engine heats up. ???
