Since I was asked to make a video of the shifter popping out of range into neutral, I've logged about 45 hours of time on my tractor and it has not popped out of gear.
That is good it has not jump of gear recently.

That is a great idea, except I have other attachments to carry too.

Worse, all the trailer guys are in texas it seems and one, just one salt exposure makes the lousy, cheap powder coat paint explode off of the trailers because every trailer OEM is too cheap to use real automotive paint that could survive a mild saline-water exposure.

folks who know something different about trailer paint feel free to jump in as I'm in the market for a longer trailer with better paint.

I may have missed it, but have you decided on a new trailer yet?

Good to hear, Eric. Maybe the public shaming taught that shifter to cut out the hi jinx. :)

The stock commercial battery went soft on me and I hoped to replace it with a standard 31 size commercial battery. Sadly, the battery tray is only 12" wide and 31 series batteries are about 13" wide.

So much for winging in a Durastart or Optima YellowTop.

I'm having trouble finding a 950cca@ zero replacement battery that'll fit.

I would imagine that it isn't too hard to fabricate a slightly larger tray. I've seen people doing that on automobiles.

That or drop a 800CCA Group 24 in there. How big is the stock one, 650CCA?

Aaron Z

The battery tray is a relatively thick (for what it is) sheet stock that the radiator, oil cooler and AC condenser are bolted down to that has a battery-shaped, stepped down shelf fabbed into it that the battery sits in. Messing with it would be an adventure I don't want to go on.

Anyway, the battery is a sealed top and side mount 950cca (800cca @ 0 degrees) private labeled commercial battery with 140 minutes of reserve (almost as strong as a group 31 battery). I called the battery company ( A A Battery Company - Batteries | Minneapolis, MN ) and was told that it is a East-Penn battery and that Napa should have East-Penn batteries with the NAPA logo on them. The guy I spoke to on the phone thought the battery is a group 34. Group 34 sounds about right, but group 34 also means that a vibration resistant Optima YellowTop is a lower-output battery.

Anybody know of a good, vibration-resistent group 34 battery with 800cca at zero?

Edit: looks like a Napa legend group 34 fits the bill. Part Number: BAT 8434

Well, dang, now my NX just started popping out of Mid range once in awhile. :confused3: It happened doing lots of forward/backward loader and blade work during Snowzilla last week. Nothing audible, and I can't tell if the shift lever is actually moving when it happens because it's unpredictable and I'm never looking down at it. So far not really a big deal, as a slight nudge of the lever, maybe 1/4", re-engages it. But sure would like to resolve it. I'll call the dealer sometime this week to see if he's heard of other reported cases. He's 100 miles from me, and hauling the tractor in for service would be a big problem due to the big Titan R3s on the rear (84" sidewall to sidewall). The Titans have been a dream in 33" of snow, but I'd need a rollback truck or a deck-over trailer for transport, neither of which I have access to.

Thank god the 108 page thread lives -

My NX pops out of mid range too and doing the same moving snow. I don't have many hours yet <10. Hopefully it will break in and be fine. Time will tell.

I'm a bit surprised that Eric's battery has crapped out after ?two years. I am expecting mine to go belly up some day soon but it has been trouble free for eight years plus now and still cranks the engine easily.

I've been met with skepticism because I'm the only one who has reported the issue. Really what is going on is that my tractor got put into service before most and so I started experiencing problems first.

Gentlemen, please report your problem to your respective dealers.

I don't even think my battery is OEM. I suspect my dealer replaced the OEM battery before I received my tractor. The battery I have is from a local Minnesotan company. Even so, the factory hold down kept coming loose and so I strongly suspect my battery died due to vibration. I made the following video documenting the battery hold down problem August 2nd, 2015.

I gave up on the factory hold down and fixed the hold down with a bungie strap and a block of wood to keep the battery held in tight.

My dealer doesn't use oem batteries, they are all purchased from a local source.

Today I chased into town and stopping at the Napa, I found a different battery, a Napa Legend 7565, that looked like it would fit.

1. ) I informed my dealer of the slipping out of med range . He said he would bring it up at the dealer show coming up.

2.) Today clearing snow there was about 3X that the tractor acted like it was in neutral and wouldn't move F or R. Was in M and the instrument panel showed M range but wouldn't move. After about 30 seconds of fiddling around it took off. Dunno

3.) Does your tractor defrost work very well and do you have any solutions to lots of fogging. Only thing I have done is put a big roll of paper towels next to the seat and it's a constant cleaning action and it's still not great..solutions? (Have set on outside air)

Comancheflight, call me crazy, but your point 2 made me wonder if this might also be related to hydraulic flow, rather than simply the range selector linkage. The same thing happened to me a few times as noted in post 1071, but on one of those occasions just raising and lowering the loader while pressing on the forward peddle, rather than fiddling with the range selector, the tractor started moving again, as if nothing had happened. This seemed odd, but I know very little about how the valving works on the NX series, so I report this only to add a data point. The other few times this has happened, I fiddled with the range selector rather than the joystick to get moving again.

Something else, while we're on the subject of range selection: Once in awhile I'll have trouble shifting from neutral into one of the three ranges, as others have occasionally reported on the NX and DK HSTs. No big deal, because I've just nursed either the forward or reverse pedal a moment or two and the selector slips into gear. In fact, I think this is common from time to time across other makes of HST tractors. It has worked for over 20 years with my Kubota B2150HST.

HOWEVER, last night I was going through the NX series owner's manual and came upon something in section 4-36 that I hadn't recalled focusing on. It says:

"Follow the instruction below if a problem occurs during shifting this [range selector] lever:

1. Put the range shift lever into the neutral position.
2. Depress the pedal slightly [doesn't say which pedal!] to prevent the gears in the transmission from rotating.
3. Shift the range shift lever into the desired position with the brake and front/rear driving pedals depressed."

Now I'm wondering what this section in the manual really means! Should we be depressing both the forward and reverse pedals simultaneously?? Is there yet another pedal involved, as well? What other pedal would "prevent the gears in the transmission from rotating"?

We're due for more snow tomorrow, so I'll try to get out and try some different things. I'm going to feel a bit silly if pressing both directional pedals simultaneously makes it easier to get into range. :)

Input from Eric, other NX and DK HST owners, in particular, and anyone else welcomed!
