My New Barn

Sadly it's been depriving me of seat time lately, but I'm almost done building my new barn. Of course, now that it's built, I'm thinking I probably need a bigger tractor which may or may not fit in the barn...

The forklift was definitely useful building it. A crane attachment would have been nice, and I'm now trying to figure out how to design one to go on the QA. A manlift would have been REALLY nice, but I can't really figure out what to do beyond the pallet on forks...

Very impressive!!! I took the liberty of looking through your albums and was really impressed with your home. The barrel ceiling is just amazing!! WOW. Is the balcony at the peak of the house functional? Did you do all the woodwork?

Holy Christmas Charlesaf3 that is an amazing looking "barn". I think you're going to have to give the maid a raise for cleaning that many windows.

Thanks all, appreciate it. Its been a lot of work. But I'm happy with how its coming.

And yep, the barn has more windows than the house. But hey, I spend a lot of time out there, and like the light!

Eddie, did the woodwork myself. The barrell ceiling was surprisingly easy to frame. Took plywood ribs and jigsawed them to the curve that fit, and attached them to the joists. Then just shot the beadboard on with 2.5" nails.

And yep, balcony (widows walk we call it up here) is operable, with nice ocean view. As you can see, it's on the project list. Maybe this summer, if I finish the barn.

Barn is 20x36, framed to park a tractor on 2 floors (drive in basement). 10 foot ceilings, with top floor the same size. No wood on exterior - that's all concrete board, Azek, etc. I don't ever want to paint.

Any idea on how I can get the pics to show up as thumbs? Every time I try it I get broken links.

Thanks for the kind words.

We are finally starting to see some nice weather up here - looks like we might have spring this year for a change, so I'm going to go out and take more pictures. I've done a lot of work since those were taken - 700 sqft mahogany work deck being the main thing.

some more pics - I think I've actually figured out how to get the thumbnails to work.

Built the barn doors out of azek and mahogany, with stainless strap hinges. 3 down, one left on the first floor

The deck is mahogany, 12 ft wide, 66 linear feet, L shaped. I like to work outside in the summer, but still be able to roll my tools into the barn.

Doors are 8' x 8'. So of course I'm now thinking of buying an 8'2 tractor...

Here are a few more from different perspectives. Like I said, I framed it for parking on 2 floors, but wasn't comfortable with the lintel a full 8' would give me below, so that door is only around 7'4 or so high.

The back shows how I'm doing the corner boards. Still haven't finished trimming out the back door, but it'll be a pilaster and cap like the driveway side.

As you can see, I've got a LOT of landscaping to do, unless I can convince people I'm going for an "on the beach" look. You can see lots of our quality subsoil lying sandily around. Can I just say drainage isn't much of an issue?

Thanks a lot, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I always think barns can be pretty too...

I should have built it bigger though

I knew I'd think that as soon as I was done.

I'll take some pics for the framing details, but basically I used engineered wood I-joists 1' on center, with blocking every 2' or so. Steel beam down the center on 4 lally columns. Deck is 3/4 advantech, 2 layers, laid perpendicular.

All that was spec'd and signed off by a local engineer. Only $500 for the engineering of the building, which I thought was ridiculously cheap. A fair amount of engineering went into the foundation, it's on cantilevered footings. I told him "General Rommel will be pleased" when he handed me the foundation drawings, it was like the Atlantic Wall in Normandy. The upstairs is also engineered - split structural ridge of LVL

Not that much smaller - that's 20x36. Though 3 floors, and 10' ceilings.

Made the corner boards myself out of azek and azek knockoff (Mainly rhino XO, it's cheaper.) The actual "corner" of the columns is Azek - the make a 5/4x5 or so premade corner. I'm big on proportionate masses, so that was way too small for me.

So I put an azek cleat up to butt the hardiplank up to. Then I padded the corner - you can see on the ones that aren't done yet, only 2 are finished. Put a 1x12 piece of azek (rhino actually) on each side of the corner, than put the azek premade corner over that. Balanced it on the other side of the pilaster with a piece of 5/4 to the same rip, overlayed to form a J channel over the hardiplank.

Hopefully that'll make sense if you look at the pics. I wanted some strong greek revival allusions

Thanks on the land, I'm working on it - clearing the forest here got me into tractors. Hired a guy with a kubota, and as I was helping him cut it down, decided, "I need to get one of those"

btw - one of the things I am most pleased with is that none of the things exposed to weather should decay - it's concrete board, Stainless, PVC, and Mahogany. Roof is plastic/rubber slates, 50 year guarantee.

I'm optimistic I'll be dead before it needs to be painted or such, and my theoretical kids can deal with it.
