I like those grips, but wouldn’t use J= Junior in my own shop. SOOW only, when it’s my own place. Skip the “J”!

You’re not running 600V, but the heavier insulation doesn’t cost that much more, and takes a lot more abuse.

What abuse would a hanging outlet take? You swing around samurai swords in your shop during a nightly kabuki theater dance? Either S or SJ is perfectly fine for these. For a cord on the ground, the heavier stuff is a good idea.

Good point. I always just buy SOOW as a matter of habit, since I never know where I’ll ultimately reuse the stuff. Cost difference of a little extra rubber is low, when compared to the fixed cost that is the copper component.

its a garage, not a shop. wife has shelving along walls and center of garage. no way (yet) to attach along walls which is when i looked up, thinking i can string through joists and hang an outlet

if i ever get her stuff out of garage, i can rewire

Well if you're gonna just string outlets from the ceiling then I suggest that you do what others have suggested and hang reels from the ceiling. Way less hassle than trying to use twist locks and each reel will have a bunch of cord already wound up and ready to go. just reach up, grab the cord, and you can choose ahead of time which gauge of cord you want.

I use the same approach for compressed air. Instead of running pipe around the shop, I use this hose reel:

It can be mounted to the wall, floor or ceiling. I have mine mounted near the door, so 50' of hose reaches the entire shop and outside as well.
