Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I mowed for about 4 hours today using my Caroni 1900. Yesterday's session ended early when the original belts gave up the ghost! The flail performed very nicely today and while mowing I was thinking about the "pressure gradient" debate.

On several occasions, I came upon a hawk feather (maybe they were turkey feathers), and each time the feather escaped from the mower unharmed! I even ran over a few of them a second time to see if I could mulch them. No, I could not.

My conclusion is that GMan Bart is correct.

Can anybody help identify which model this John Deere flail mower is? I need to buy bearings and would also like the specs and in case I need any other parts, knowing what model # would be great. It is about 7ft, I'm guessing 6.5' cutting width.

KenB2920 talked me into looking for a flail, and I found a too-good-to-pass-up deal on a Ford 918H 8ft flail in great condition. So far I'm really liking it.

Best I can tell is that it is from the 1990's.

But... Does anybody have any specific knowledge on this mower? Any points of interest worth mentioning, things to keep an eye on specific to this model, general consensus on the quality of this mower? I'm not really finding a ton of info out there.

You appear to have a John Deere 25A flail mower, very well built and reliable.
It has a 7 foot cutting width and fits through an 8 foot overhead door.


I would strongly suggest you visit a John Deere Dealer and order a manual
from them for this flail mower.

Ah, feathers and the pound of leaf versus the pound of feathers debate(so to speak)

The feathers actual greater surface area will permit to be pulled through the mower hood an then
ejected with no damage riding the air current which is accelerating along the interior edge of the
mower shroud to the rear where it is ejected.

It is certainly something in a fun way to talk about an have discussions among all my friends here.

Leonz... I am excited to hear what you have to say about the flail mower I just acquired. I am guessing that it is a 918 H based upon other pictures I have viewed online. However I have not found any nameplates or model numbers yet so I suppose it is still up in the air at this point.
