A son-in-law's sister recently bought a new computer, but had it shipped directly to my son-in-law for him to install some software and such, then he said he put it back in the original packaging and took it to UPS to ship it to his sister; shipping from Ft. Worth, TX, to the Austin, TX, area. He insured it for $500. The sister said when it arrived, it appeared someone had punted it, and it rattled in the box. No problem; it was insured, right? Well, UPS said since they didn't package it, it wasn't covered. They didn't tell him at the time that it wasn't covered unless they did the packaging, and the fact that it was in the original packaging from the manufacturer didn't matter. They refused to pay for it.

Agreed, they should have told him when he shipped it.

a few years ago i shipped a new guitar to my son for christmas, it took a beating, and he sent me the pictures
and i filed a claim with UPS and they did in fact reimburse me for the cost of the guitar. maybe they have
changed their policies,,, this was 4 or 5 years ago.

Hmmm, what do they have when you reject a shipment that arrives damaged? We had a $3000 UPS that was shipped via UPS and we sent the first two back as they got banged around and broken in transit...

UPS ships it back to the sender and explains that is wasn't really insured?

Not exactly a UPS damaged package issue but a UPS incident that occurred at our place that bares sharing.
Last Christmas eve, a UPS driver called at our farm to deliver a package and was greeted at the front door by my daughter visiting for the holiday. Upon her opening the door, my Dalmatian bounded out to greet the driver in his usual non aggressive manor. Yes, a woof or two, and the driver was on down the drive.
On December 26, I was paid a visit by the county animal control officers alleging a dog bite had been reported at my address. WTF. Yup, said UPS driver alleged he was bitten by a vicious dog while making a delivery. OK, so notified the insurance guy just to be on the safe side and about two weeks later received a letter from a local law firm stating they were representing the UPS driver in the matter of a dog bite case. Long story short, despite the testimony of my daughter who witnessed the incident and all other evidence the claim was a scam the insurance company paid out a thousand dollars to the driver (and his jack leg lawyer). I have since learned UPS, FEDEX, and USPS employees make a second income claiming false dog bite claims and the legal community is more than willing to claim their share of the booty. The topper to the whole incident was a letter I received from the insurance underwriters informing me that I must have the dog destroyed in order to continue the policy coverage.
It took a year of interrogatories, letters, and a down right battle with the agent of record to reinstate the policy. And yes, I still have my spotted buddy............
