Perhaps my science is a bit rusty (like my water). But here's an article which is somewhat in the same line of discussion. I can only see this situation being worse if you're drinking distilled (demineralized) water.

Too Much Water During Exercise Dangerous, Expert Says
Thu Jul 17, 7:10 PM ET Add Health - Reuters to My Yahoo!

LONDON (Reuters) - Drinking too much water while exercising could have fatal consequences, a sports medicine expert said on Friday.

The excess fluids can cause a condition known as hypoatremic encephalopathy, a swelling of the brain because of a lack of salt in the blood.

"To date at least seven fatalities and more than 250 cases of this condition have been described in the medical literature," said Timothy David Noakes, of the University of South Africa in Cape Town.

The death of a runner in the Boston Marathon last year from the little-known medical condition heightened awareness about the dangers of drinking too much while exercising.

Cynthia Lucero, 28, of Ecuador drank large amounts of a sports drink during the race, according to friends.

In a commentary in The British Medical Journal, Noakes said that people in the military, hikers and athletes, particularly women marathon runners, are most likely to develop the condition.

But he said it is preventable and advised athletes to drink to quench their thirst. Most forms of recreational and competitive exercise would require between 400 and 800 ml (140 -- 280 fl oz) of liquid per hour.

While certainly my days of being an athlete are long behind me, I can't imagine ever taking in that much liquid in any hour. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The MINIMUM listed there is over a GALLON! Quite frankly, I can imagine dying from drinking two gallons of anything during a basketball game... or three gallons during a football or baseball game.

Am I the only one to do the math on this? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Kubotasaurus,

Drinking plain water, versus some kind of "sports drink", can make a difference in some situations. However, the mineral content of the average drinking water is not significant in such a case. Even with my terribly hard tap water, it takes many pots of coffee before I need to clean out the deposits. Minerals in water have more to do with the taste of the water than with it's value as a source of said minerals.

Nope.

8 oz = 1 cup
16 oz = 1 pint
32 oz = 1 quart
128oz = 1 gallon

That's a lot of fluid!

Yeah - that darn metric system, and a misplaced decimal to add on to the confusion:

30 ml = ~1 ounce.
400 ml = ~14 oz. (not 140 oz.)
800 ml = ~28 oz. (not 280 oz.)

I'm not sure about London but here in the US it is a well known medical condition. If you drink a gallon of water all at once whether you are an athlete or not you stand a good chance of dying.

Ah Ha! So it was the toxic water in that gallon of beer I drank that caused me such discomfort the next day! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Thanks, Doc. I hadn't bothered to check the metric conversions to see if they were accurate. The idea of taking in gallons of liquid while exercising made me woozy enough. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I have been notified, very politely I might ad

Hmmmm,

I weighed myself yesterday before going out to excercise. It
was a VERY HUMID afternoon made worse when the sun
moved from the clouds or I moved out of the shade.

I lost 1.5 pounds walking/running 5 miles. I take my three
year old, she managed .75 of a mile before she got tired and
I put her in the running stroller. She is 30 pounds and I don't
want to think about how much the stroller weighs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Last weekend the weather was much cooler and my three year
old had a nap and she ran/walked 1.5 miles. Pretty impressive
for a three year old. She would have done more but she got
out of the stroller and started running while looking back at
me. I saw what was about to happen and yelled for her to
watch where she was going and that danged big crack in the
sidewalk reached up and tripped her. MUCHO loud screaming
then insued.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif People started looking out of their houses
to see what was going on. Which was a GOOD thing.

Anyway, a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. So if I do my
math right I lost 1.5 pints or 24 ounces of water. I drank
pretty close to 16 ounces while running/walking so I really
"lost" 2.5 pints.

That is a lot of water! Can one really loose that much water
in an hour or so?

Later,
Dan
