I weighed this little cottonwood log on the platform scale, but didn't measure the diameter:

How dense is cotton wood compared to oak?

Well, drink some CUT kool-aide, call it oak and lot's of folks here will say it weighs 3500 pounds...

A cut is more capable than you give them credit for. After I run out of cut CUTkool-aide I have to use a forklift. image-2781889977.jpg

According to the log weight calculator, your cottonwood was about 18 1/2 inches in diameter. A red oak log this big will weigh over 1400 pounds. The calculator is assuming the moisture content is 75%.

I went back through the posts and discovered (more confirmed because others pointed this out) that the 3500 pounds originated from you. You sir, are the one drinking the kool-aide! Or at least trying to spread rumors of people drinking CUT kool-aide on this thread and on others. Your claim is unsubstantiated. It's about time you put this to bed.

805 pounds on that unique loader is impressive. The distance from the log to the front wheels is more than the machine wheel base. What's the back end of that machine weigh? I'm surprise the rear didn't lift!

Agreed. So much is not being understood.

Your loader is rated at 2600-2700 AT MAX HEIGHT.

For whatever reason, everyone keeps wanting to focus on that, and think it's the absolute max. The loader has alot more ratings than just max height.

Your loader is indeed rated for at least 3700 at ground level since that's the breakout rating.

But then again, its only a 35hp tractor, and his 90+ HP tractor can't lift 3500# at ground level either...

Well, you can see his homemade weight box. I'd guess the back end is pretty heavy and the engine is also rear mounted.

Thanks, the moisture would be high, because I had just pulled it over a week earlier, 7/17/2009.

It did lift. Had to add one more weight to the three already there .

It will lift 300 pounds with no extra counter weight on the back.

Yep, the weight box is an old grill guard modified to fit on the back.

How much more weight was on it for the lift?

I can see 4, 100 pound suitcase weights and there is a 100 pound steel block under the 3 that are together, so 500 pounds total.

REALLY??? #129 is a REPEAT of what got the 3500 started...

Guess you better go back and find "that" post...

When folks say out laddish things I just can't resist, so to bed it isn't! lol

Keep in mind, I have a barn over flowing of old and new, farm tractors including some CUT's, so I'm not guessing here... BUT, I don't drink any brands kool-aide! AND as I'm logging pretty regular, I also under stand what 3500 pounds REALLY is...

Currently you are the only one trying to cause trouble. I asked how the weight of cottonwood compared to oak. I have never seen a cottonwood tree. Then you jumped in and said well someone will call it oak and say it weighs 3,500 pounds. Log weight calculator is fairly accurate for straight timber. It assumes a 75 percent moisture content and the log is a perfect cylinder. Really the only accurate way is to weigh it.

Cottonwood is very light when dry but holds lots of water. Very dirty tree's, lucky you don't have them.

I'm not trying to cause trouble at all, it was suppose to be "as funny" as the original post that was made claiming the 3500 pound figure in the first place... lol

I guess there's nothing in the kool-aide to activate your sense of humor... lol

That's more than your tractor weighs.
