Thanks and after my time at FT Polk in the late '60's I came to love most things Cajun--other than Ft Polk and most of the water type snakes. You guys hunt any birds down there like quail or ?.

What a coincidence. I was in Ft. Polk in the late 60's too, and am from Ohio, sort of.

Every bucket hook thread gets a lot of action, because there's 57 ways to attach them. Probably 55 of the ways are just fine.

I had a weld on hook welded on my bucket and it broke!!! I replaced it with a piece of 1" steel welded down flat on the top of the buket, then torched a hole through the steel plate and the bucket, then inserted a 2 5/16" ball. Now I can move the gooseneck around very easy and still wrap a chain around the ball.

Will a 3/8 size grab hook accommodate both 3/8 and 5/16 chain??

Yes. 3/8" hooks will work with 5/16" chain. Usually will work with 1/4" to 1/2". Almost all 5/16" hooks will work with 3/16" to 3/8" chain also.

Slick setup, but that's exactly what I thought. It appears as if they use the 3/8" weld on hooks (can't tell if they're grade 40 or 70, but it wouldn't make any difference on the little tractor it's made for) that cost $3 or $4 each and maybe another $10 in materials or so. I guess you're paying for their, admittedly, slick design work.

One thing I will add because I haven't seen it in this post is to preheat your hooks before you weld them. This prevents cracking as the weld cools. I usually use a map or propane torch for a few minutes.
