It's a long 'O' down here.

(Don't get me started on how 'y'all' mispronounce zebra... short 'e') ;)

About or abote?

Edit: or aboat?

In my 60 years of living and travelling all over Canada, I have never came across any Canadians that pronounce about as "aboat" or anything close to that. I see it on American TV shows when they try to joke that Canadians say it that way but I think it is a long running missinformation. Not that it matters....but it seems it should be clarified from true Canadians . So I decided to make it a project of mine today. :)

Wag,
If you're saying Australians pronounce zebra with a short e and Americans use a long e, it must be because zed is pronounced with a short e while Americans pronounce z with a long e. I lived for over sixty years without knowingly hearing the zed pronunciation.

Some don't pronounce it project nor pr0ject but hood with double oo pronounced u as in book - buk, hook - huk

In Cajun country it's Vieux Carre which has no o but pronounced voo ca-ray with double o sound.

Exactly. Just as we pronounce the letter "z" as zed. (y)

Canadians pronounce the "ou" exactly the same as a Scot, probably due to a plethora of Scottish emigrants throughout the early 19th Century.

Mind you, Aussies are somewhat split pronouncing 'Lieutenant'. It's either ^Lef^tenant or your ^Loo^tenant. I'm in the ^Lef^tenant "camp", but I am retired military/Navy. 🙂

There is such a wide range of accent throughout Canada end even within province (stats) just like the US ... This guy below makes some pretty good impression of each province, he make it worse or it doesn't reflect every citizens but its pretty accurate in my opinion.

I've heard people pronounce about as aboat or aboot. They were South Carolinians.

Interesting. I've heard many a true 'nadian say it as "aboot". Find some youtube channels made my Canadians, it's all over the place. Even our northern US states, the closer you get to the Canadian border... the more likely you'll hear it.

Maybe you just can't hear it, because it's natural to you, LOL.
