Using my 16' double axle trailer today to haul 3 logs to log yard. After I backed in to unload and was standing beside trailer and her a pop and the rubber cap on the back axle, which is the brakeing axle, shot out about 3 feet along with a small glob of grease. End of axle where the plug goes was very hot. Brakes had not been smoking so I don't think it was that. Had on an estimated 3500 lbs. according to a log weight calculator. Have hauled many more pounds of gravel before. Any idea about what happened?

Brake dragging, was the other side hot?
Wheel bearing failing, adjusted wrong?

Brake or bearing. Only one way to find out.

I once had the bearings go on a horse trailer. The axle was so hot the rim, tire, and piece of axle spun off and rolled into the bushes. It looked like what puddy would look like if you twisted it until it spun off- except it was steel. Keep the bearings greased- and replace old bearings. Check for too loose or too tight. A hot hub is telling you something. Don't ignore it.

I used it today and checked it to compare heat differences on each side. All were about ambient temp. It make just be the fact that I did have the brakes set a little more aggresively. Thanks to all that replied and I will continue to monitor.
