At work we had a S10 pickup with the 2.5 fuel injected. It was a club cab or whatever they called it. The rear seat you sat sideways. There were four of us that worked on a survey job for a highway about a 45 minute drive from the office out of that thing. I was just a year out of college but looking back at it I would consider it cruel and unusual punishment.
Those jump seats were pretty ridiculous, I believe back then the only way you got back there was one of the front seats folded and moved forward?

Yes the passenger side front seat slid quit a bit forward. I’m a little over 6 feet tall but at least when I was that age only weighed about 190 pounds. With two of us in back you kind of got each others legs in the way. With 4 of us in there and surveying equipment in the back it was pretty gutless.

I'd rather have any of these '70s. It wouldn't have to have a radio.View attachment 788534View attachment 788535View attachment 788536
I wouldn't mind one for a Sunday driver. I'm in the seat for hours every day though, not always on the best roads. I like the ride, comfort, and power of a modern truck.
Besides, my little Colorado has more payload and towing capacity than the last truck I bought brand new... a 1984 F150. I also like my AC; often that can make the difference between going back out for a few more hours on a July afternoon or calling it a day.

I think those little seats were designed for little people, under 12 years of age.

I will remember that comparison next time the kids and wife complain how cramped they say my double cab sierra is and as a twist to the knife I'll point out the nice doors to access the back. Lol. no I probably won't.

But it was a great truck on the highway and level ground.....

We had a 72' Cheyenne, 307ci with Turbo 350 auto trans. Beautiful truck, nice ride, fair to decent mileage for that era truck but it would get hung up ON level ground (grass) and if a bit of dew was on the grass, forget about it. Pulled it out of the front yard more than once with an old Craftsman 8hp riding mower, never took much to get it moving but it HAD to have the help (when off pavement) no matter what tires were on it. Learned to NEVER get off pavement or gravel with it.

About 15 years ago I bought a 1987 GMC "heavy half" K1500, thinking it would be a fun truck to have. It rode harder going down the highway than my 8N Ford; and there was so much road noise that I don't even know why it had a radio. Taking it off road was torture; one night I dropped a tire in a hole and smashed my nose on the steering wheel.

My dog at the time travelled all over 4 states with me and was more at home in a truck than anywhere else. Yet after coming home one day when the frost heaves were so bad that I was slowing to 10 mph; she refused to get into the truck again.

Not truck related, but someone got stuck on our hill in a ditch. They had a Toyota Celica.
I was coming up the hill and offered assistance to pull them out with my tractor. The driver said its no problem, as he had a limited slip differential. And he backed it off and got right back on the road. In a situation, I thought needed towing. This made an impression, as to why some companies, didn't include limited slip differentials on vehicles, clearly designed to tow things like boats and campers. I can't forgive Ford for allowing and putting a non-limited slip differential in the G30, with a towing pack, I bought. It made the whole point useless. :)

My Colorado has the G-80 locking differential, designed to lock at under 20 mph. In order for it to work however, I first need to disengage the traction control and stabil trac, which takes about 20 seconds. That's about as useless as waiting until you're stuck before shifting into 4WD.

The dog didn't even want to sit back there! 🤣

Correction... G30's where GMC. Not Ford... Me bad... :) The concept is still the same. As other people told me that Fords also didn't have Limited slip transmissions on their Tow spec vehicles that should have had them. Sorry for confusing it...

Always interesting to see how people self-define "truck". In was thinking pickup truck, but it quickly went to SUV and grain/commercial style trucks.

So far, I love my Tundra (2017 SR5). I would like it more if I had never driven something with a couple more creature features.

Had a '91 XEv6 Pathfinder that was great until the family grew to the point we needed a van.

Didn't technically 'own' this one, but since I share a first name with my dad, it was technically in my name. '76 (+/-) IH Scout. I learned how to drive on this. Sometimes I would sneak it when my folks were gone and drive around the block to practice. What I didn't realize at 13 was that nothing happens in a small town that escapes notice and I was not nearly as invisible to others as I believed.

First car I ever "owned" was a late 60s rusted out scout. Never could get it running more than a few minutes at a time it needed way more work than I was capable of at the time and the guy that gave it to me had little time to rebuild it, I was stubborn, naive, ignorant, and only 13. payment for the scout was me grading some of his acreage and roads so he taught me to use his old Ford 8 or 9n to grade with a back blade while he hauled in fill with an old dump truck. That was also the first tractor I ever operated by myself unsupervised lol. I truly enjoyed learning how to operate that old Ford, and the knowledge he "paid" me with I got good at operating it eventually, even though I had nothing to show for my "work" materialistically.

Well yeah, when I think truck I think pickup. My Suburbans I consider trucks. The 93 was more of a work truck while the 2003 is more living room on wheels, but still hauls plywood sheets and tows our trailer, so it's a truck to me.

My favorite would be my '71 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser (in little pieces for 35 years). Hoping to make it a retirement project. I don't consider it a truck, just like I wouldn't consider traditional Jeeps trucks.

Had to laugh that my living room on wheels brought home all the materials for our garage addition inside of it, with the exception of the rebar and bags of cement that I put on the car hauler trailer, and the trusses and shingles were delivered. So I guess it is a truck.

I heavily modified and rebuilt/repurposed a old ladder rack from a full size pickup for my old step side shortbox Tacoma to haul building materials. A Subaru brat or Ford sport trac
probably had more cargo carrying room, till I put that rack on lol.

One of my football buddies in HS had a 70’s Scout. 4 cylinder was underpowered, but would slog through anything. No top. Just sat outside with a tarp over it. Fun days. It rusted out for obvious reasons.

This museum closed I believe, was located in Florida, had an amazing collection of international tractors also had rust free mint condition scout and scout 2s I didn't even know rust free scouts existed before lol. I feel fortunate I visited it on my travels before it closed.

Technically, they belonged to the IH dealership my uncle and dad owned. They were red and white. Uncle's had a white roof, ours was red. Otherwise, they were identical.

When I was a kid dad worked for a construction firm building the near by parkway, they used Scouts. He would sometimes bring on home on weekends, it was AMAZING the place that thing would go, at least to a kid. But a power house it was not. Would like to get my hands on one of the old Scouts but alas I think most all have now been converted to rust.

Best:
2020 Chevy Trailboss - I currently own
1981 J Series Jeep pickup - The thing was a tank. Very sad to see it go.
2014 Silverado with the 6.2 engine - Plenty of power and rode great.

Worst:
2020 F250 Super Duty - Spent more time in the garage than on the road.
Any older Dodge P/U I have ever owned (3) great motors but all rusted out before their time.
2004 F150 - Nothing but engine problems
