When the building maintenance people started retiring in droves at my job the industrial machining company realized they could have made better decisions. All of the buildings (about a dozen) were 60 years old and a lot of the machining was also.
The new people didn't know how to quickly fix several problems. The company had to rehire the retirees as an advisory crew to keep production up.
It sounds like your employer would benefit hiring an apprentice to shadow you for a few years.
About 10 years ago during the merger the decision at the highest levels at the corp distant headquarters was to outsource as much of facilities as possible… my team and even my on call backup/vacation relief were let go with one of the justifications being it is expensive to keep up on required employee training and mandated continuing education.
Corp can’t eliminate everyone because someone still needs to interface with contractors and that someone needs to know the hospital and hospital workflow…
I’ve got roofers working today because it’s a no surgery day… admin said we should not be paying overtime contractor rates but the work would greatly impact patient care and really upset surgeons… the odors are strong right now in the surgery wing.
Tuesday evening I have a crane for a rooftop boiler pick and place… might go to midnight…
Example of corp cost savings from yesterday… regarding one of the standby generators: contractor sent a quote to replace two 8D 1000 CCA batteries that are 3 years old.
3 years is a regulatory safe harbor… nothing wrong with the battery capacity or output.
The quote totaled $2,450 with much of the cost being attributed for 2 guys, due to weight of the batteries making it a 2 man lift, overtime for after hours plus horrible travel charges both ways and truck charge.
I used my FleetPride account and picked up 2 premium Deka batteries at $299 each before tax.
My travel and time to remove and replace after hours totaled 2 hours and 15 minutes plus I got paid $18 mileage…
So the $2450 proposal where I would have to be here anyway was reduced to about $815 saving $1635.
Plus I got to exchange the two core batteries with the two on my tractors… so my dozer now has 3 year old batteries instead of 7 year old…
I’m always looking for the win/win.
