My personal assessment is #2 is better at raking material backward, plucking limbs off trees and picking large rocks. #1 is equal or better for most anything else. For a compact tractor (if you wait 90 days) with limited lift capacity, you can’t do better than everything attachment. Compact Tractor Dual Lid Wicked Root Grapple from Everything Attachments

Type 1 large single lid, with replaceable tines has worked OK for me so far

Thanks everyone for the input! So much good information and insight.

My uses will be mainly picking up loose brush and debris, fallen or cut tree limbs, and the occasional log or two. I do have pallet forks, so moving multiple logs at once can be accomplished with that. No large rocks down here so that's not a concern. I don't know if I'll need to actually root rake enough to definitely require that style. I agree with what so many of you said that either style is better than none. I've considered the add-on grapple to my bucket or forks, but I know that I want a separate standalone grapple. I have the skid steer quick attach, so swapping attachments is no big deal. My loader only has around 1,000 lb. capacity at the bucket pins, so weight is a concern and I want to retain as much payload capacity as I can. I plan to go with a 54"-60" grapple. I believe I'm just stuck in the analysis paralysis right now, lol.

A grapple doesn't have to be mega strong to just pick up simple brush piles. Look for one that the lid has some gussets to improve side loading. You want it to open wide and have lots of gullet space to hold branches without having to crush them. You basically just need a well designed HAND to grab brush and it shouldn't be too heavy.

^^^...But no one ever stops at just picking up sticks!!!...

I need to move that log...

Maybe I can push over this tree, it's just a little bigger than the last one I did...

Hmmm, maybe I can dig out the roots with the grapple, or lift up at the root ball...

Number one is working well for me . I also

like the ability to stack lumber and such in the grapple while working around the yard.
