70 outside this AM. Rain moving through.

Looks like a feet up day. And a day of remembrance.

The feet up, not by choice. I recall reading about Roy and his ZTR. Yeah, I started cutting grass, like David, it is an hours long job. I decided to cut horizontal to the house and not vertical. Figured I would give the pattern a break. What I failed to realize at the time was that I forgot where the rough spots are. LOL. About half-way through the cutting I hit a nice spot and wow....compression fracture of the spine. Should not joke about it. But darn, that made the next few hours and rest of the evening a wash. This AM, still....it will take a few days to clear up I am sure. Not doing that again.

If I can walk or bend without that spike of pain, I may go run some wire in the Milk House. Other than that....I will just take it easy.

Hope all have a good day today, and remember, we are still the best country in the world.

Be safe.

Good Morning

Slept in a bit this morning. Must have needed that.
Raining today temps around 70's
Will see what I can get into in the barn. It is amazing what I find when cleaning up an area. Some of that dating back to previous owners.
Wish I had a lift, would make life so much easier. Have an AC high lift jack that works pretty good but still...
I have the head room for a lift even for the sprinter being 9 ft tall. The only issue is the floor. It is double planked oak floor so two post lift is out but maybe a 4 post will work?

Sorry to hear about your spine being injured. Not fun. I have some spots like that also and always get surprised somehow when I hit them. Earlier this year I took out the air

suspension seat from the tractor and adapted it the Zero turn and that has made a big difference

Good morning, the low temp is 63 and the high to 77°F. There is a risk of a T-storm this afternoon.

I am leaving here in about an hour, bobtail back to the terminal to get my wagons and prepare to load.
If the T-storm happens, then I wont be loading as we have to stand on a steel tower/rack sort of affair.

Cochrane is about 5 hours north of North Bay, so I may go as far as New Liskeard (1.5 hrs) and camp there overnight then carry on in the morning at 4 A.M. That will put me into Cochrane for 7 and ahead of the crew that probably wont show up till 8 or 9.
Gotta get my act together

Stay safe all

Also use bungee on defector on both rider during mowing season, once the leaves start falling no bungee help with leave clean up.
Thanks for the tip, Thomas!
I was going to remove the deflector...the bungee was to be an interim solution.

The Z Turn we hAve has a 60 inch mulching deck works well even if tall just have to mow at different settings highest to 4 inch setting. The 26.5 hp motor chews it up really well.

One time mowing grass in Moneta wife ran over a snake threw it up on the deck of mower wife not a happy camper

Good evening! High temp today only hit 76°.... hazy sunshine, from both smoke from the west and high thin clouds. A t-storm passed to the west of us, not big at all. No rain.

Got the transfer case taken apart, after breaking my snap ring pliers. So a trip to our now local HF for a new pair. 45 minutes later and bearings are out. Well except for one.... it's a blind hole roller bearing. Can't just tap it out.....

So, contemplating leaving it in. It seemed to be tight, no noticeable damage. But, I don't know the tolerances. This bearing could be the culprit making the noise --- or not.....
It's the rear of the front output shaft, inside a 'cup'.

Any suggestions or comments from the machine experts here are welcome!
WOULD YOU GUYS LEAVE IT IN?

I can go try and rent a special puller, but I think it's too big by looking at the picture online.
The pullers I have are for pulleys, applying pressure to the center shaft. Saw a guy on YouTube crack the 'cup' using one like I have. I don't want to do that.

Good thing ---- no abdominal pain at all! I believe it was some new bug....
Here is a pic of some of my pullers. The arms are reversible on some of them to pull out inside bearings

A day never to be forgotten!

62° right now...high in the mid-70's. Looks like rain, but not calling for it

The posts today read like "how can us old guys get hurt when working?"

I need to finish one area of the lawn this morning. Bouncing around on the ZTR didn't result in too much pain...just the occasional twinge.
Back to chipping after that...going to take a couple weekends, considering the way I move around. As I'd written yesterday, it's a big, jumbled mess...and I don't move that fast. I'm going to move the tractor 10-15 feet further away and start a pile of branches I've untangled

Good morning! 64 now, it has rained earlier. High is supposed to be 72. Likely more rain later.

We decided to do more storm clean up recently. Been busy clearing more trees that are down. 5 more over the past couple of days, some widowmakers down as well. Had 3 widowmakers that slipped to a point I could get the choker and a long chain on them. The NH in 4WD pulled them down.

The small saw killed another coil. Wife went and bought another saw. Same model. I replaced the coil in the old saw yesterday and found something odd. One of the bosses to mount the coil wasn’t tapped deep enough. The screw would get tight, but the coil was not actually tight. I didn’t have a 5mm metric tap that was that coarse, so a 5mm lock washer became a spacer. See if that was the smoking gun.

Not motocross Drew….flat track. I was the right age to get hooked by the MX craze that swept the US, but it did nothing for me. Flat track thrilled me the first time I ever saw it. Still does. Not riding these days, helping a decent young rider. I have become fascinated by the suspension/chassis side of the sport. But….I “might” come out of retirement to ride a specific Bultaco that got me involved in wrenching in the sport at Salem, which was it’s last races many years ago. And I need a ride on the raffle Kawasaki. I have put a lot into making this a decent bike.

Not sure what today will bring other than a trip to HF. They have the 5k lumen LED work lights on sale. Gonna replace some fluorescent fixtures in the garage

Everyone stay safe out there

We've talked about this before but I'm old fashioned, think there should be a lid on noise on Sunday morning. I seem to be in the minority .
I agree...

A beautiful song with an interesting background

Never a big fan of Judy Collins...but what beautiful eyes!!

I am a fan of the late Pete Seeger...just never cared for his politics

Seems to be drying up a bit...still pretty overcast...

"I'm old fashioned, think there should be a lid on noise on Sunday morning"

Me too but it doesn't seem to be a majority opinion in my neighborhood. :(

Good morning to all! Low of 52°, only 55° at 09:00. High is only supposed to hit 76°. Good chance of rain / storms today.

Thanks for the input on getting the bearing out. Unfortunately, the grease trick won't work..... there is a 3/8" oil channel off to the bottom side of the cup.
RNG, I have that bearing puller set. Unfortunately there is only an 1/8" of space under the bearing race, so no way to get the "cross arm" behind the bearing.
M7040, I have similar pullers, the type that screw down in the center won't work because the center pressure screw just punches out the back of the aluminum case.

I'll go out and take a pic.... It will explain the predicament.

OK, here's a pic of the bearing/ case.

The red arrow is the oil passage that feeds under the bearing.
The blue arrow is the very small space under the race.

Can't push against the center of the cup... this is a pic of the backside, it's only about an 1/8" thick aluminum.

Any other ideas? .....

Just throwing in a pic of the mess.....

The best way I have seen work is the heavy grease method,
pack it full of grease after finding a wooden dowel that just barely fits in the bearing.
With the bearing filled with grease sharp raps on the dowel with a hammer will usually hydraulically push the bearing up and out.
Also once it's partly up then the expanding jaw pullers will also work.

LS, what I would do is make up a rod and weld on or forge a hook that can go under the race and then use an old hammer head to slide on it and weld a big nut on the end to hammer against. Also heating the case with a torch will lose the fit due to differential expansion

Morning all, rain here.

Rip - sorry to hear about injury

9/11 is always a sad day for me. I lost a number of friends and the building I worked in (7WTC).
I work in 3WTC now, and hardly ever go in, the entrance has the memorial right across the street.

Off to fix the washing machine, again, new board is in.

Son's band playing at a local club later.

Off to London tomorrow, so I'll be quiet for the week.

You can also on the bench grinder modify the end of the rod to create a lip that goes under the race and then bend the other end to hammer against

Have used this before successfully
