Drew,

The local apple orchards here told me once that they use an old Amish trick to keep the deer away.

Buy big bars of Ivory soap. drill a hole in the middle of the bar, and tie it with rope around a fork in the tree about midway up. Deer cant handle the smell, keeps them away...

Worth a shot...

Be well,
David

thanks David, great idea!

35, but ice on the bird bath water. Should be nice today with some sun, finally, and warming to 47.

I thought I put up more than enough firewood last winter for this year, but I've already burned about 20%...it's been cold. Once things dry a bit, I'll be back out with the saw.

David, I remember wrapping gifts with the kids - always exciting for them, with some Christmas music and snacks. Have fun.

David, great job on the fence.

Nice job on the gates. Your 3 part solution to the gate is interesting. I've built a lot of field fence, no cyclone fence tho.

Nice boxers, we are looking into rescuing a boy to go with our girl. No breeding, just pairs seem to bond better.

Have a good day all.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 43° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 73° (Benson, AZ) with sunny skies all day. Back on the road today. Less than 300 miles. Should be a good travel day.
Drew, apple trees are what kept the deer coming back to our place. Only one tree left with no apples. Did not see a single deer all year. Weeds growing in blacktop.
Irv, hope the lunch talk went well. :D
David S nice fence job.
David M, enjoy the Christmas shopping and wrapping.
Good Morning All.

I enjoy the lunches, but I confess I like some "me" time too. But so does she, so it all works out.

A little bit of brown sugar and butter, or maple syrup does wonders for oatmeal. :)

Just came in from cleaning the driveway. Gaaa! The crap was freezing from the bottom up with the slushy snow insulating it from the air. What a freak'n mess. Rain drizzle and 36F now.

38 now and then going to 42 today. Starts to warm up after today. Rain chances come back on Monday.
News this morning was talking about both coast get hit hard. A nor'easter for the northeast and the Pineapple Express bringing a storm into the west. Think this is where buppies moisture for next week will come from.

Dave and everyone in the northeast stay warm and safe.

Wish we had a Costco in the area, everyone seems to like Costco. The nearest one is in Nashua, NH, or Waltham, MA, each about 4 hours one-way. Of course I would use the sales tax-free NH store.

Thanks. Have to admit, the 3 part gate wasn't originally planned. When we did the concrete drives earlier this year, ad did the 2nd gate made sense due to the angle to best approach the cottage. The 3rd gate was kinda last minute to facilitate walking thru and the mower, otherwise it would have been out one gate and back in the other, a minor inconvenience. This seems to work and the dogs haven't challenged it.

My original thought was to go with field fence as I had enough wood posts and T posts left over from previous project, but not enough fencing. When I priced it at HD, 2 rolls of hog wire vs 4 rolls of chainlink was almost the same. Of course I would have had more hog wire left over. Chainlink gets more expensive due to the top rail and the additional hardware. I'm gambling that this hybrid installation will be functionally sufficient as is but I can strengthen with additional posts and top rail when and if necessary without doing a tearout. Having replaced "cheap" field fencing last year that rusted in place, I'd rather avoid the extra work.

A male/female pair will be good. If typical, they will likely play rough. Mine love to be about when I'm on the tractor, very experienced in their supervisory role. Ours are retired from breeding, 2 litters and done. Everyone in the house has altered plumbing now.

Our Costco is 80 miles one way. We only go a few times a year, predicated on our need for dog food. Will get 4 40lb bags today.

Ya, 80 miles is marginal unless it really pays.

One way to strengthen your chain link fencing is to run top and bottom cables. I think our bottom cable is galvanized steel, about 3/8" made up of three strands, then tied to the fence with aluminum wire every 2-3 feet. The chain link fence will give a lot more than a tight cable if you push against the top or bottom.

We have a top pipe rail, cable on the bottom only. The cable is on the inside (dog side) of the fence.
