Bill, clearly one man's castle is another man's cottage...wonder if they call them that
for preferred tax treatment...
8 mil for a lake house is a lot of money no matter what country you are in.
one could always say I got a call about a frozen pipe so I have to go or my low temp alarm sensor went off.
If it's ok for the repairman to be there, what if you do your own repairs? Like an impressive number of folks on this forum do.

38 outside. Heading to mid 40's. An energy conservation day. The coyotes were at it again last night. Not sure what they are after, but they seem to have made it a habit to carry on right around the farm house these last few nights. A few hand claps from the balcony did the trick, and I'll have to move the night vision upstairs to see if I can get a count.

David, my provider is now a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). A small local company in this area that gets a piece of the big cell companies voice and data services.

The interesting aspect of my setup, is --- I never changed from Verizon as a provider, just had to introduce a middleman for the front-end stuff. Verizon does offer this type of plan and connectivity to some areas under their newer "Home" LTE plans. But not in my area, so I had to go with the middleman.

Verizon LTE Home Internet Service - Using Our 4G Network to Bring You Suburban, Urban and Rural Internet

Hope all have a great day. Be safe and stay healthy my friends.

You may have heard the story of the Toronto mayor (Rob Ford) that got caught a couple of times doing coke/cocaine? Well he died. His brother is our Premier. I sure hope it doesn't run in the family. This premier is a lying, two faced waste of skin compared to other Premiers we've had.

In Canada according to the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency, our equivalent of IRS), if you live in one residence, that is your primary residence and your cottage becomes a secondary residence and is NOT tax deductible. The only way you can claim your cottage is IF you make an income off it, then you can claim all the expenses on a percentage basis, deducting the time you spend at said cottage. So if you spend 25% of the year at the cottage and rent it out the other 75%, then you can claim 75% of the expenses.
I dug into that before I bought my boat/floating cottage.

40 up to 47. Cloudy and breezy on our walk this morning...no critters seen.

Rip, interesting about your cell service. I need to look into it. We are okay with our data service, not super fast since just copper DSL through the phone company, CenturyLink, although fingers crossed they'll bring their fiber through, since it is very close. Our cell phones are Verizon. However, we have noticed a degradation in the cell signal from Verizon here over the last few months, and they always had the best signals vs. the other cell companies. We don't do a lot of video streaming but works okay.

Eric, I got a good laugh with your nighttime solution for David.

Ground still too soft to drive the tractor, so wheel barrowed firewood to the porch yesterday. I may just walk my chainsaw back to the woods to give it some exercise...but by the time I get to the trees needing sawing, I may be worn out from carrying it.

Our county's first responders starting getting their jabs yesterday...so will be a while before 1b and 1c shots.

when I lived aboard my boat in S. Florida for three years, the tracking and allocating of boat expenses
for tax purposes was interesting.

I had to chuckle about this because I live in a 900sf cottage. That's what the landlady refers to it as.
No boat house here...

Still working on my internet mess. Ubiquiti Unifi stuff near ready to deploy but not going to until I get a solid signal. My 4 yo Mofi apparently won稚 configure for the APN 4GAS wants me to use, but if I stay on the AT&T Broadband APN I知 very likely to get Throttled after 22gb and that stays until end of the cycle. If I get throttled and switch APN痴 I apparently stay throttled. So biting the bullet for new modem and antenna. There is also the possibility to switch to Verizon, but that entails reorientation of antenna about 90ー of course that would require a change plan, at price increase naturally. A neighbor visited this morning and she got 4 bars on her Verizon iphone standing outside at corner of house. Verizon tower is only about 1/2 mile away, about 200 ft higher up the mountain, but I have some trees between us.

Oh how I feel your pain, David! Not sure what the acronyms you're using mean, but in my experience, just because your phone gets plenty of bars doesn't mean you'll actually be able to place calls or surf the net. I have Verizon service, a 4G phone, and can't reliably make calls with four bars. When I talk to Verizon, and I do this every year, and ask if there's anything that I or they can do to improve the signal, all I get is "we're sorry". So I tried Sprint/T-Mobile, and while the signal was better, it wasn't reliable. Makes sense, because their antennas are on the same tower that Verizon uses. And that tower is six miles away, and the canyon top is in the way of line-of-sight. Near as I can tell from your photos, though, if you can see the tower from where you can put the yagi antenna, and it's only a half mile away, you should get a nice strong signal. If I had that situation here, I'd be on it like a rooster on a June bug! But I'd also make sure there was a free trial, full refund clause to anything I agreed to. There was supposed to be one for the above mentioned trial, but I've yet to receive a refund for the first month of service.

But that's only half the battle. The other half is getting enough data. The popular thing for the cellular providers is to tell you is that if you go over your data cap, they won't charge you for more data. But if you read the fine print, you'll find words to the effect that if you use more than some vaguely defined amount of data, they will slow your connection down to old time land line modem speeds. This applies even to the so called "unlimited" plans that each of the big three offer, and it applies to every MVNO reseller of those big three services. Those resellers will tell you that they'll never throttle your connection, but what they don't tell you is that the big three, from whom the resellers are buying that cellular service, all retain the right to throttle speed if they determine, by that same mystical number, that you are abusive in the amount of data that you consume.. But I've never been able to put my finger on just what that number is.

Someone here suggested signing up for two accounts, installing two cellular modems, and just switching between them as that magic number of bytes was used up. Maybe you can do the same thing by purchasing two sim cards, and just swapping out the cards. Rig it so the billing periods ended by a two week difference, and you'd probably be covered. Wouldn't be cheap. My satellite service costs me a hundred a month for 100Gb of data, but it's so slow there's no way I'll ever be able to use that much data. If there was, I'd consider it a good deal, and in truth, I'd pay twice that to get that amount of data if it was reliable and fast.

So where does that leave you? If you can put your yagi in the same place from which you can see the tower, and you can either get two accounts, or you can get service from two different providers that have antennas on that tower, maybe that'll work for you. But I don't know of any way of telling for sure without actually trying it. Just be sure there's a free trial period, and be ready to keep after 'em when they try to screw you out of the first month's fee if it doesn't work.:pullinghair::2cents:

BTW, if you follow Eric's advise and become a midnight lumberjack, I recommend one of Popgadget's ChaChing Makita electric chainsaws...

Morning all! 29 here going to a partly cloudy 35. Had a little snow over night but I think I will leave it be. Just enough to blanket the driveway.
Working on a few projects today in the morning then I will be heading to the apartment house to check on a couple repairs.
Been working on a few Valentine's day project for the wife. Here is one almost finished:

Good Morning!!!! 44F @ 5:00AM. Cloudy this morning with showers during the afternoon. High 53F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.
Looks like by Saturday the light showers will be over and we'll be in another dry spell for the rest of the 10-day. I like good weather, but we really, really need the rain!

We have the same problem with our governor, and our Speaker Of the House, Bill. Both have been caught breaking the CoVid rules. Rules are for thee, and not for me!:irked: What I don't understand is why people keep reelecting them.

Got the steel cut and welded for two more sets of hoops yesterday, but since I brought home the wrong size bolts and need to exchange them, I need to make a run into town today. Yeah, I need milk and bread, too.

Got a tracking number for the shotgun yesterday, so I'll also stop by the range and let 'em know to keep an eye out for it.

Happy Hump Day, folks!

Yes. He seems on the up and up. Warned me AHS is slow in getting a replacement furnace. He said he is picking up new furnace from Lennox.

Good Morning
35 and clear skies, high of 45 forecast.

Not much to report, yesterday went as predicted, some time at the airport, some time helping son play gunsmith. I did start the day by cooking breakfast-

Today will probably be a repeat, except for the waffles. UPS says LED work lights for tractor will be here today, so I’ll fit installing them into the schedule. I’m curious how they will work, they’re 3200 lumens of 6000k vs 600 lumens of much warmer halogen light from the OEM. Their supposed to be a simple plug in direct replacement for the old lights, using the same mounting brackets.

My internet connection has been a challenge over the years, starting with dial up , then 256k DSL, but I was at the fringe distance from the CO, so it didn’t work as advertised, Verizon said that I could live with it or go back to dial up. Next was satellite through Direct TV, download speeds were better, uploads were terrible. Comcast ran cable down my road, but after three different tries to get them to connect me, they initially said it would be $2k to bring it up my lane, I said go for it, they revisited it twice, escalating to 5k, and when that didn’t discourage me, they finally said service wasn’t available to me. About 5 years later Verizon ran fiber down the road. When I asked about getting connected, they scheduled it about a month out. Just before I was scheduled, hurricane Sandy blew through doing major damage to their aerial infrastructure. But after that 2 or 3 month setback, they buried a fiber line back to my house, and connected me with 75mbs service. At no installation charge!. That was direct burial fiber, a few years ago it got cut where it goes into the ground at the pole by the road. They spliced it, but came back in a few months and ran a conduit and pulled a new cable all the way back to the house.
Now I have over 200Mbs. Makes be feel better about being jilted by Comcast.

Ron, do you plan to continue with AHS when it comes time to renew?
It’s nice to have the coverage, but it sure seems like they make it as painful as possible to use it.
I’m glad that it’s your furnace, and you have an alternate heat source, imagine if it was your well pump.

Paul, if they came all the way up your driveway at no charge, what a deal.
I installed LED lights and left original optional light package on, on both tractors, the LEDs take so little power not
hard to do. They were very bright, very white and made the others look like headlights on a 55 Chevy.

Some warm strawberries on that waffle would be very nice

Amazingly, they did it twice. Once with the direct burial and then again with flexible poly conduit with pull boxes every 300 feet.

The new lights are direct replacements for the OEM lights, and use the same bracket, so the old lights have to go away. The new ones even come with a plug to mate with the existing harness.

Good morning, such a nice change this week to have relatively dry weather, even if it is below freezing.

Popgadget, fascinating as it is, I dare not comment on your barrel work in case they call out a swat team to pounce on me for being associated with an Ak47 gun making forum  :)

Sodamo, that Verizon tower looks in a great place for reception. Doubt you will need to, but in that situation tweaking for optimum reception is generally best done at night. Why ? Still air gives more consistent propagation of radio waves ? Nah, just thinking less chance in the dark of you getting caught taking chainsaw to neighbor's trees. :D

I learned a new term this morning Eric. Fly Tipper?

Fly-tipper caught red-handed and forced to put rubbish back in van

This "Fly Tipper" got caught in the act in Sheffield.

I saw an ad on tv saying the home warranty company had paid out over a billion dollars in claims.
Big business, lot of insurance sold.

Being in the business, and having taught the "why" of insurance to trainees in Hartford CT, insurance should be used to pay for things
that are major, that would cause losses or responsibilities far more than you could pay for yourself or want to lose as an asset.
So I have never bought extended warranties and always carried high deductibles because that's what my cash/liquid fund is for.
You have retirement money, long term money and short term money. And real estate. Some of that short term needs be be liquid within days if not hours.
I call it the get your kid out of jail money account. Not the I'm going to buy a new truck account.
But it sure could be the I need a new HVAC fund.

Insurance says transfer the risk of loss to us. I say you bet, but not on everything.
I've been making these decisions for 50 years now and I've saved a lot of insurance premiums.
Actually I spent those savings and probably more on higher limits liability coverage, comprehensive medical, etc.
I know for sure I can't afford a hospital bill like I had this year. I paid not one penny on a 300k bill.

Insurance brings one peace of mind. I get it. I taught it. It is sure not a perfect system, one which made me get so frustrated
I sold my insurance agency and ran an electronics business instead. I wanted to deal with a product folks smiled about...

Warranty business is hugely profitable to the insurers.
Important to check AM Best rating of insurance company backing the warranty program.

I'm glad Ron is getting a new heater. Not exactly a magic carpet ride of service though.

Good morning. It was 57° here this morning and overcast .. our high will try to get to 70° this afternoon with a "cooler" front and thunderstorms around 3 p.m. After today .. we'll only get to the 50's for at least a week.

I called the "COVID information" number for our local Community Hospital yesterday. They're on the Texas site as the sole provider of vaccinations in our county. All I got was a recorded message that told me nothing and .. never was able to speak to a human being.

I stopped at the Columbus VFD yesterday afternoon .. to say hello to a couple of FF friends, and noticed that the Texas Department of State Health Services had opened an office, in a former nursing clinic building, across the street. I found their phone number listed on the Texas site and gave them a call. A nice lady answered on first ring and she advised they were expecting a shipment of 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week and were planning on restarting vaccinations by Monday. She said they were taking names and offered to put me on the list. That was easy .. now how long to work my way up their "list"?

Since we'll likely see some rain, in advance of the thunderstorms this afternoon, today will probably be spent in the shop.

Hoping for an excellent "Hump Day" .. for everyone.

Prayers to all.
