Am I the only one who just rides the line a couple times a year with a sprayer?

No, I did that at my house the first two years. The blackland soil without any vegetation on it drys out and cracks. Cracks deep enough a yard stick won't touch the bottom and you can see the concrete that the post is sitting in. I stopped that because I was worried my fence would lay over due to lack of support.

Down at the farm we have sandy loam over red clay and spraying doesn't have the same effect.

I was trimming around trees along the edge of my property today with my walk behind trimmer. It uses the same kind of hangers and line that the above mentioned trimmer uses. I went through five pieces of the four sided .155 nylon line trimming weeds and grass about one foot tall around about 35 trees. Is that normal or is my trimmer line too soft?

It depends on what your trimming, what line and how old the line is.

Old line doesn't last long at all. Stalky plants are harder on the line than grasses but that doesn't sound like much life at all for the line.
