Eco Boost vs V8

Head in the sand; "In your own make belief world"

Calling you a liar; nope don't know you

Wood; do you cut your own?
Did you have to purchase a tractor,
Trailer, wood chipper, chainsaws,
Sharpening equipment, splitter,
Stove, wood boiler, have it installed, etc

Or do you buy?

Glad you love your echo boost!

I can say that I for sure save money by heating with wood, and it's far from anecdotal...I have my logs brought in, which is to the tune of ~$600 For a truckload(works up to about 20-22 face cords.) I bought a $700 Chain saw 4 years ago, and a $1500 splitter 6 years ago. They need their maintenance items, maybe to the tune of $100/year, IF I wanna get frisky and change the hydraulic fluid in the splitter. Gas and oil, bar oil maybe $75-$100/year. I only buy one truckload, and about 8 cords of that is mine, the remaining 10-12 cords are sold(currently ~$80/cord,) leaving me $800-900 to buy my next load, and pay for most of the related mainenance costs of the equipment. The only true cost to me, is an average of the equipment I have bought, a total of a couple grand over 6 years, effectively heating my house for a little sweat, and less than $400/year. Works for me, and I don't even fell my own timber.

LOL If I hadn't bought the tractor, crawler, winch, 2 saws, a splitter, woodchipper, wood boiler, wood stove, wood trailer, 3 extra 20" bars, 5 saw chains and last but not least plenty of beer when I work in the woods I could heat my home with electricity and save thousands still keeping the thermostat MAXXED! Oh and the turbo for my gutless tractor too cost me a grand all done....

I love this thread but I'll tell you all one time I wouldn't trade heating with wood for the world, gets me outside in the cold with the wife, dogs smoking a big stogie catching a nice buzz (after the stacking is done yeah right).

Another thread about to be locked. Power equates to BTUs as far as engines go, step on the loud pedal and the fuel goes in.

Fred

Let's see then there's the day I dropped a 16" poplar across the hood of my tractor and smashed the gauges, THAT only cost me a grand to fix those back up!

Look at the numbers and compare it to the other V8 options and Eco Boost. It's gutless. I tow in large groups during the summer and the 5.3 L trucks get left in the dust merging on to the free way and climbing hills. The Hemi trucks drink the fuel, just the way it is.

I will say the 5.3 is a good motor. It's track record shows that but the 6.0 is much more powerful with decent mpg ' s towing.

Chris

I towed plenty with 2 5.3's and I still wouldn't call them "gutless". They pulled just fine albeit at a high rpm under load. That's just fine by me for a multi-purpose motor, which is exactly what it is..Does it compare to my last 2 6.2 GM's, no, but the 6.2 is a different animal although the gas mileage is almost identical.

Just because it ain't your thing doesn't mean it's garbage or gutless. I've heard more than enough about some of the 5.4's but I don't comment as I don't and haven't owned one. If someone is happy with their other brand, I'm happy for them. I don't disparage what they own as some sort of expert.

Maybe this will shed some light on why Chris made the comment. I agree gutless was probably the wrong word choice. Maybe something like weaker or puny would have been more appropriate for comparing these two engines output. Basically what ruffdog is saying, in GM language, is that the ecoboost gets similar MPG as the 5.3 but has similar power of the 6.2.

I would agree that the 5.3 liter isn't "gutless" when compared to the 4.3 liter as another example.

Point being, MPG numbers shouldn't be compared between engine with dissimilar outputs. The ecoboost hands down gets better MPG than the 6.2 liter that it most resembles in output.

To the OP,
If the 5.0 has enough power to accomplish your needs, I would suggest that engine. If you NEED or ENJOY the extra performace, get the ecoboost. Simple as that.

The problem with your attached torque graph is that it's ancient and thus deceptive and misleading. The current 5.3L DI GMC Ecotec V8 is rated at 383 lb/ft torque on 87 octane gas, 416 lb/ft on E85. Oh, and 23mpg highway. And much better MPG than the ecoboost when towing.

Love you guys that have your head in the sand lol

My Ego Boost gets the best mileage and has the best power...

I save so much $$ cutting wood and heating my house with it...

Believe what you will; I believe in the truth,

Head in the sand; "In your own make belief world"

Calling you a liar; nope don't know you

Wood; do you cut your own?
Did you have to purchase a tractor,

Glad you love your echo boost!
You only believe the truth and say that I am in a make "belief" world, sounds like you are calling someone you don't know a liar.

Answers to your meaningless questions:
I cut my own.
Already own a tractor.
Own a splitter. Cost $900.
Have 23 acres of forest on site.
One chainsaw and file.
Enjoy cutting wood and is great therapy and exercise in the winter months.
Here is my heating source from where i currently sit. I drew up the blueprints of the house around it.

Not a problem at all with the graph. It was directed to ruffdog and that is the 5.3 engine in his truck. The new 5.3 is better but still not in the same class for area under the curve. Needs to be revved to achieve peak torque. The new 5.3 should get better MPG than the ecoboost. It makes substantially less power. Again, compare engines with similar torque curves.

You make a good point that even though the ecoboost has been available for approximately 4 years, it still excels against the newer motors.

Diamondpilot - what is your mileage towing?

I know diamond pilot will chime in also because his dad owns an ecoboost. I can tell you my experiences towing. I have the max tow package with 3.73 rear. Towing my 16' car hauler totaling about 3000 lbs with motorcycles and 4 wheelers, I get 14 MPG at 60 MPH. I got 11.3 average at 70 MPH towing my 5000 lb high wall popup toy hauler to West Virginia and back last year. You can see that trailer in a thread I created then.

Thanks, jejeosborne - that definitely is better than my HEMI. I get app. 11.5 mpg with the same set up (trailer, UTV and other junk). But I don't trailer that often, and the cylinder cutout + VVT gets app. 20 mpg with no load, so I'll stick with it for now.

I am watching these (& other) posts to see what is happening in the 1/2 ton truck world. I got rid of my 2007 Chevy 5.3L because it was a torque wimp (had to rev the snot out of it to get any towing capability) & it turned into an oil pumper because they didn't design the cylinder cutout right. Long story. Then they went bankrupt, stopped truck development for awhile, and lost my business.

I too enjoy watching the truck wars. I bought new in 2011 what I thought was the best at the time. Who knows what will be out there in 7 years when I am ready to purchase new again. I go on 10 year cycles so I can save enough to not need financing. Previous truck was a dodge that served me well. Probably would've bought another but needed a little more payload and always told myself if ever turbo in a gas truck, I'm standing in line. I have high hopes for the ram diesel if only they can get the payload to match there drivetrains. No doubt I like that 8 - speed.
