Ever look at a side x side comparison of earlier generations 3500 vs 3500 HD? they are pretty significant. I only owned the 3500.

What was a typical GVWR for the 3500HD's? The ones with the old 454 and 4L80e would be a nice reliable rig. I think another rare bird is the same truck with a 5 speed (NV4500).

You can argue a Ford is built heavier but a 3500 Chevrolet with either a 5.7 or 6.0L are both proven, reliable engines that are cheap to fix.
I'm really pretty much straight Ford. But the 5.7 is good because of availability. The 6.0 is just good, all around.

I have a 96 3500 HD, it is a different cat. Straight front axle. 19.5 wheels. I am holding off putting it back on the road. I found another one that has a pulpwood loader on it. Converted to haul long logs. If I can get that one for a parts truck to have, I'll go all out and put it back in service. Mine is a service truck with a 12' tool bed.

A 3500HD was really more like a low pro Topkick vs a regular 3500. The weak link to the HD was a substandard drivetrain. If you had an 8.1 with an Allison automatic you’d have had a nice ride. The 6.5 and the 4l85 was lacking. A 454 with a NV4500 would have been pretty nice. The HD had a completely different and much heavier duty frame, it had a completely different front axel. It had a solid I beam axel with leaf spring, it had a heavier duty rear axle with considerable more springs than the 3500 had and it had 10 lug 19.5 tires.

I liked the 3500HD too, except they had a pathetic tow rating.

I really like old dump trucks! This one has a flathead V8(100hp) and a crash box 4 speed. About the only thing it hauls these days is me with a big grin on my face.

The 3500HD is comparable to a Ford F450, about 14,000 GVW. Keep in mind this was 1990s high end, not comparable to nowadays. For the average person a 3500 is a better choice. The parts are much cheaper than a HD. The truck is also lighter which is very beneficial to a 350ci. I dont know anyone with a 454ci but they are probably good engines as well.
