I have been looking (unsuccessfully, so far) for a simple chart or table which compares sizes of twist drill bits in fractional, wire gauge, metric and letter sizes. For example, what is the closest or equivalent fractional size of a #30 bit? Or, what is the closest metric size to a 9/32" bit?

Anyone have such a table or a link on-line to one? Thanks lots in advance for any help.

Ron,

You're a gentleman. Many, many thanks. That's exactly what I needed. I've bookmarked, and I will also print out to keep on the wall in the garage.

L.S.Starrett, Brown & Sharpe and Production Tool & Supply all print and sell a wall chart on plastic (about 3 foot x 2 foot) that lists all the conversions, tap drill sizes clearing sizes, decimal equivalents and always, at the bottom, a little advertising blurb.

No shop is complete without one and of course a "my wife can't see" calender. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ebay has several of the charts listed. Price is cheap. Click Here My old Starrett chart does not have metric on it. Maybe I should bid on one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your right. I do not own any metric drills. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
But I own a <font color="orange"> Kubota </font> and reply to post on TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe I have a good section of drills that should last me until I give up on doing shop work. Most of them are sharp unless I forgot to sharpen them when I cleaned up from the last project. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Daryl & Ron,

Thank you both for the info and the humor, too. Gotta love this forum.

I'm gonna get me one those Starrett wall charts for sure.

Ron:

I'd like to give up on shop work but I have way too much cash invested in machinery. Heck, I have 2 Gerstner boxes filled with LSS, B&S, Mitutoyo and Fred Fowler precision tools.

Besides, if I quit puttering around in the shop, I'd watch the Superbowl and harass my wife. Before dinner I ran a couple of prototype float bowl extension screws for racing bikes. Nice billet aluminum bodies with 18-8 stainless studs. Hopefully, I'll get the job. Actually, I probably will because items like these can't be affordably made anymore. Of course the carburettors will be extinct the end of 2006. All engines in '07 that are carburetted will have to be EFI. Come to think of it, I'm close to extinction too. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

My laptop is on a wireless router so I can sit out here amongst my stuff and correspond. I can even sit on my bike or in the sidecar and type away....the miracle of electronics. What a life. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Put a cheesecake calender next to the Starrett chart. It makes it much less boring. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Got no intention of giving up the shop anytime soon. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Just know that it will happen someday. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Machines in shop are 40's and 50's stuff. Work good, but still old.

Don't consider 40's and 50's stuff to be old. Thats when the Boomer's were born. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmm! So was I. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I will leave the Boomer comments to others imagination. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Almost forgot. I like your chart. Already made a copy for the shop and laminated it.

Think I'll get laminated this weekend /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Call Production Tool and get the BIG ONE. It's easier on our old eyes. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
