Took a bus to Billings with a friend in 1984. Over the next 3wks we road back to Madison WI, self contained with paniers front and back plus tent. Second day, Beartooth pass, 11000ft. Then on through Yellowstone, Bighorn mtns, Black hills. Most mileage in one day 168mi between Madison SD and Mankato Minn. Between 1997 and 2003 rode individual cross state tours through Wisconsin, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. Each was about a week and 500mi or so. Took my 10yr old son along through Virginia. Every 1/2mi seemed there was a history lesson - revolutionary war, civil war, Newport News, slave cabins, plantations, Jamestown. Lots of comments from people who wished their parents had done that kind of thing with them when they were young. Competed in the Wisconsin Offroad Racing Series (WORS) for 4 years. That was intense. Trained year round. Now I just ride up and down the rural road out front, and add a few side roads for 15mi or so. It used to be I could burn the candle at both ends, work hard, play hard, not anymore.
