Does it work well applied over DEK?

I don't know. They were two different projects I used them on, not one over the other. I would say because DEK is not an oil, and it doesn't crack or blister, that you should be able to use Spa-n-deck over the top, but I would ask the manufacturer to be certain.

No I didn't use the basecoat. Actually, when I did it, I don't think there was a basecoat product. I just purchased the finish coat, and it came with a sheet of instructions. Basically you had to wet down the timber with a bleach/water mix to kill any mould spores. Then you had to wet down the timber and apply the first coat, wait 2 hours and apply the next coat, upto 3 coats.

Reading the basecoat directions, it sounds similar to this, and the finish coat has the color. It might be that if you use a color and do 2-3 coats the finish is too dark, but when I used it i'm pretty sure the only colour was "natural" anyway.

After I finished the timber, the color gradually darkened over the next couple of weeks to a really nice finish, and as I said earlier it still looks new.

Thanks!
Gary

Try to relax

I'm relaxed just fine... just saying my piece. If -nobody- steps up for the environment.. there eventually won't be an environment. To passing aliens, ( ;) ) The human race will look pretty funny in a few hundred years running around in space suits on a greasy ball of rock..

I picked up a gallon of Cabot's at the paint store yesterday to use on a railing, 26.00. They were not excited about promoting a clear finish as it aledgedly has no UV protection and it was their experience that treated lumber (southern yellow pine) suffers most of it's damage from exposure to UV.

I only used about a pint of that Sikkens Cetol SRD, and while it doesn't stick to your shoes enough to come off, it still feels a little bit sticky after nearly 4 days, while the DEK will dry overnight. So I went back to the paint store today and told the gentleman there what happened and he refunded my money without me even asking.

Now I'd never even heard of Cabot's, but I noticed a sign there for them and asked and the fellow said they sell more Cabot's than anything else.

I think that in a few hundred years, technology will be as such that we'll have long moved on. Like I said at the bottom of my original post, I wasn't trying to get your bra in a knot.

I would hope that we have discovered some great technology.. and statistically at the rate we are goin.. it looks hopefull.. however to 'bet on it' is unwise.. and conservation will always be the best policy... worst case is we have a clean environment when we come up with the magic technology that will help us keep it that way.. vs bringing it back from the brink..

I use the Armor All brand sealer. Its cheap at Walmart and lasts a long time. Thompsons only last a year and the Armor All is over 2 years and is still beading up like the day I put it on.

I noticed that Armor All brand at Walmart, but didn't pay much attention to it. I guess I'll have to take a better look next time I'm in there.

Cabot for me. Everything else seems to track into the house even months after application. A Transparent Stain is somehow better than a sealer.? I used Cabot and have not had to re apply for 3 1/2 yrs. Guess I will use it again next time.

We are getting WAY off topic here, mabey we should start a new thread? Since we are here though I will say this, I think regardless of what we do we are going to be in trouble at some point - due to population increase.

I don't think any new technologies can get around this problem, but I think there will be massive war/famine/starvation etc eventually.

I hope i'm not around then, but I think the environment will continue just fine without us.

Yes.. I do believe we will hit a population load that the planet will not carry.. I don't think it will be in my lifetime though.

And yes..as soon as we are gone.. I'm guessing the planet will do just fine..

I recently learned that Sikkens no longer makes the "Cetol DEK". They do make a "Cetol DEK Finish" which I'm told is a different formula. I could not find it at any dealer in my area; would have to order it on the Internet, and it's expensive. So I let my local Sherwin-Williams dealer sell me a gallon of Deckscape. It looks great initially, and the water definitely beads or pools on it. I've only done half the job, some with a brush, some with a roller; hope to do the other half tomorrow. The only question will then be how long it lasts. At least it's water based and easy to clean your tools when you finish.

Every U.S. man, woman, and child will fit in Texas, with each having 62.7 acres.

U.S population 2009 = 2,743,429
Texas area in acres = 172,044,800

Opps!

Well, a little over half an acre anyway.

U.S population 2009 = 305,529,237
Texas area in acres = 172,044,800

Thanks Willl

The Cetol is well reputed around here but my neighbor put it on his deck 1 year ago and it's peeling already. The deck is directly in the hot sun.

I have not yet seen a stained deck that has held up very well. My parents spent over $10,000 on a fancy cedar deck and the crummy stain makes it look bad. We just let ours weather. I guess it's a matter of continuous maintenance which seems like a drag to me.

Interesting old post, two, two, two threads in one!;)

Sikkens Cetol has to be put on properly. If you put it on too thick and do not wipe off the excess there is a good chance it will peel.

When I picked up a few gallons this summer the guy was very quick to instruct me on using a brush to put it down and after a few minutes to wipe off any excess stain. Sikkens does not recommend using a roller or spraying any of their finishes.

I have used Sikkens for a number of projects and guess I have been lucky with it as it has held up nicely for us with our cold northern weather.

As for the formulas all of the companies had to change to meet government regulations.

Many years ago I knew an older, very wise man, who had worked for a major paint company as an engineer. He said that all of the paint companies changed formulas fairly frequently as the prices of raw materials changed. Apparently they had worked out ways to produce the same result with different formulations.

Now that was back in the days of oil-based paints, and the changes were purely for economic reasons. Formula changes for the purpose of meeting government regulations may well degrade performance.

I'm afraid you're right about continuous maintenance. If my deck was just out in the open to all the weather, it would be a little different. Mine is actually entirely under the roof and the north end is at least partially protected by a live oak tree. However, the south end gets the evening sun, any blowing rain from the south, and even water from a lawn sprinkler. So one end needs maintenance once every year or two. The other two-thirds to three-fourths would be OK for many years, but I've always applied a new finish to the whole thing each time in hopes of keeping it all as much alike as possible. I'm sure you can tell which is the north end and which is the south end from the pictures in post #27 of this thread.:D
