Does it work well applied over DEK?

I don't know. They were two different projects I used them on, not one over the other. I would say because DEK is not an oil, and it doesn't crack or blister, that you should be able to use Spa-n-deck over the top, but I would ask the manufacturer to be certain.

No I didn't use the basecoat. Actually, when I did it, I don't think there was a basecoat product. I just purchased the finish coat, and it came with a sheet of instructions. Basically you had to wet down the timber with a bleach/water mix to kill any mould spores. Then you had to wet down the timber and apply the first coat, wait 2 hours and apply the next coat, upto 3 coats.

Reading the basecoat directions, it sounds similar to this, and the finish coat has the color. It might be that if you use a color and do 2-3 coats the finish is too dark, but when I used it i'm pretty sure the only colour was "natural" anyway.

After I finished the timber, the color gradually darkened over the next couple of weeks to a really nice finish, and as I said earlier it still looks new.

Thanks!
Gary

Try to relax

I'm relaxed just fine... just saying my piece. If -nobody- steps up for the environment.. there eventually won't be an environment. To passing aliens, ( ;) ) The human race will look pretty funny in a few hundred years running around in space suits on a greasy ball of rock..

I picked up a gallon of Cabot's at the paint store yesterday to use on a railing, 26.00. They were not excited about promoting a clear finish as it aledgedly has no UV protection and it was their experience that treated lumber (southern yellow pine) suffers most of it's damage from exposure to UV.

I only used about a pint of that Sikkens Cetol SRD, and while it doesn't stick to your shoes enough to come off, it still feels a little bit sticky after nearly 4 days, while the DEK will dry overnight. So I went back to the paint store today and told the gentleman there what happened and he refunded my money without me even asking.

Now I'd never even heard of Cabot's, but I noticed a sign there for them and asked and the fellow said they sell more Cabot's than anything else.

I think that in a few hundred years, technology will be as such that we'll have long moved on. Like I said at the bottom of my original post, I wasn't trying to get your bra in a knot.

I would hope that we have discovered some great technology.. and statistically at the rate we are goin.. it looks hopefull.. however to 'bet on it' is unwise.. and conservation will always be the best policy... worst case is we have a clean environment when we come up with the magic technology that will help us keep it that way.. vs bringing it back from the brink..

I use the Armor All brand sealer. Its cheap at Walmart and lasts a long time. Thompsons only last a year and the Armor All is over 2 years and is still beading up like the day I put it on.

I noticed that Armor All brand at Walmart, but didn't pay much attention to it. I guess I'll have to take a better look next time I'm in there.

Cabot for me. Everything else seems to track into the house even months after application. A Transparent Stain is somehow better than a sealer.? I used Cabot and have not had to re apply for 3 1/2 yrs. Guess I will use it again next time.
