BX25D backhoe ripper question

Another possible solution - I would get myself a 12" long piece of precision ground stock, cut it in half, dress up the ends, and drill a lock bolt hole in each piece to make new pins.. If you are doing a little work with the ripper, lube the pins on installation. If doing a lot of work, drill out the pin centers to make grease paths and install grease fittings. I'm assuming the Kubota pins are 1" dia. A quick check at mcmaster.com showed a piece of TGP 4140 steel (5252T715) at less than $30.

I thought about the steel bar and that seems like a good idea. The Kubota shaft is 1" and the bolts I got seem slightly larger even though they are called 1".

I have an email request in with DR to see if I can source them there and I will let you know what I find out.

OK I found the parts list for their hoe and called with a request for a price on the 1" x 6.05" headed pin and they told me $6.99. Two shipped was like $22.

I couldn't believe the cheap price....so I ordered 2 and I will let you know more when they arrive. Part number for the pin is 252951. If this works it is the steal deal of the century.

I'm following this thread now in hopes that the DR solution works. After digging around some oak stumps for 2 days with my 12" bucket I'm "stumped" by the roots. I think a ripper will solve the problem, but I'd rather not spend the $300+ for the Bro-Tek if the DR will do it for over $100 less. Here's hoping you have good luck getting this to work so the rest of us can follow suit. Please keep us updated.

I received the two bucket pins from DR yesterday and just like the 1" bolts I tried they were a hair too large to go through the Kubota holes.

So no out of the box solution....

I may take them to someone with a metal lathe and see if I can get them turned down a 64th". The pins were a very good price from DR as pins from say the Case dealer started at $60.00 each. These pins are not the same heat treated metal as the Case pins but should last a good while for the work I have planned.

Hmmm.. a nice thing about that alternative is being able to switch back and forth between ripping and digging without having to stop and change out ripper and bucket. That's a pretty cool idea!

That's just a standard box blade ripper tooth you bolted on?

That does look like a good idea, but that is not a BX bucket shown and our buckets are not made for the stress the ripper would place on it. We don't have the big reinforced section at the top like the one in the picture. All we have is a very thin side section and I see it bending easily with the stress from the ripper. I guess the bucket could be reinforced with plate on one side for such duty, but not as it stands now.

The Kubota B21 bucket pins are approx .976 in diameter and might be long enough for your application.

I am going to try the box blade ripper tooth solution next week. It looks good to me and the B21 bucket is not likely to bend.

Pat, are the pins 6" long do you think?

I took another look at a picture of my bucket and it does have a reinforced section at the top, but the metal on the sides is like 1/8" at best.

Yea you could change from digging to ripping pretty easy. I have a reluctance to start poking holes in my machine.....I wonder if you could take out the center "tooth" on the bucket and mount something like that in there.....wonder if that would work.

I ordered this ripper last week, & thanks to ryan08's timely information, I was able to add the pins to my order after a credit card glitch delayed my shipment.

It arrived today, & I think I was able to figure this issue out. I too was unable to get the DR pins to pass thru the Kubota pieces, so I compared the diameter of the Kubota bucket pin to the diameter of the DR pin. Turns out the DR pin is just a couple thousandths over 1", but the Kubota pin measured about .978.
Since .984 = 25mm, I think the obvious answer is that the Kubota pieces are metric, & the DR pins (& mounting holes) are SAE.

Close enough for me though, I chucked the pins up in my lathe, & whittled about .010 off to get the diameter to about .980". I left the first 1" untouched to keep the pin tight in one side of the ripper. Not sure if I will try to come up with something to bush the other hole to the new dimension, or add some .010 shim stock when mounting it. Will probably just use it without anything unless I plan on using it for a long project. Or since the pin is bolted to the ripper & rotates in the Kubota pieces, it might make sense to just deform the holes in the ripper slightly on that side.

Also worth noting is that the machine that this was designed for has about the same breakout force as does the backhoe on my BX24, so I don't think it is underbuilt for this application. Seems pretty sturdy.

Would try tis idea, but was thinking about bolting it to the doubler on the edge which would have it 90 degrees out from where it is now.

I was looking at the angle a bit too, and am guessing that his angle was to maintain the "bucketing" action while still allowing for some ripping.

That is, if you go to start digging with the bucket and the ripper stuck out at the angle you describe, it seems the ripper would be in the way and prevent a full curl of the bucket. The ripper would contact and dig into the ground out beyond the bucket.

Just thinking out loud.....
Replace the center tooth of the bucket with a longer tooth from something else so it would function as the "ripper" when doing stumps and could switch it back to the normal tooth for digging?????
