My father is 81 and shopping for his first tractor. Looking at a LS MT122 with loader and backhoe. He lives on 2.5 acres and wants a tractor to do the lifting and hauling that is getting harder to do by hand. I own a Montana 2844R which was made by LS, and it has been extremely reliable and I would buy a LS without hesitation if I needed a new tractor.

My question is for anyone who owns a LS MT122 or 125, are they durable machines? Particularly the backhoe and how it mounts to the tractor. Is there a subframe that connects to the middle or front of the tractor? I could not find any pics showing a subframe.

He will use it to plant trees, move firewood, clear some woods, dig a drainage trench, dig post holes etc. No swimming pools, moving boulders. Maybe get the snowblower for winter and a tiller for the garden.

Thanks in advance for any info and advice.

I don't think you can get a 122 with a BH.

On the 125, the subframe stays mounted with the BH off. It's a matter of lining things up with the outriggers and bucket to release the two main pins, using the outriggers to lift off the two remaining points, driving out, then disconnecting the hoses. Mounting is just the reverse of that, but getting lined up can be a pain sometimes.

I had my MT125 TLB for 2 years, not one problem! Great little tractor, a real workhorse. I did work with it that most would say needed a full size tractor, like installing a full septic system. He wouldn't have any issues doing what you described plus some!

Thanks for the feedback and info on the backhoe subframe. I just talked to my dad, and he found a MA dealer with the MT125 in stock with loader and backhoe for $600 less than the CT dealer is offering the MT122 for, and he has to order that. If it all works out, we will drive up in a few days to pick it up.

The MT125 comes with a quick attach on the loader. Is it standard SSQA size or smaller?

It is smaller than a standard SSQA. There are a few smaller sized attachments out there, but not many.

Thanks. My dad pulled the trigger on the tractor this morning. We go pick it up 90 minutes away next Saturday.

Picked up the MT-125 today. Nice looking machine. Trailered it 2.5 hours from outside Boston to CT. My dad got it unloaded and started digging holes, practicing with the backhoe. In no time he was 4' deep.
