I am curious as to how many of you maintain your brake away battery, I don't think I ever bought a trailer with it working. Usually that is the first thing I do Is check the brake away system. But don't ask me if I maintain it afterwords. Most time all they need is a new battery but I don't think they will last more than a couple years. How are you supposed to recharge then? Take it out of the box and put it on a charger or is there a way you can charge it from your vehicle? I have been checked a couple times and asked if it works, of course you know what I am gonna say.

Brake away safety battery"

I’ve never even had a trailer that wasn’t a camper that had a battery on it.

All 3 of mine charge when hooked up to my truck and have a test button on them with red, green , yellow lights that show battery condition....

I do at least maintain working trailer brakes. You’d be surprised at the people that don’t.

Dot requires backup battery if trailer has electric brakes. It should be wired to 12v pin on 7 way connector to maintain state of charge. If your trailer has a breakaway cable for hitching it has a small battery to power brakes if cable is pulled out of switch to stop trailer.

The DOT checks them around here all mine work now......

Maybe it depends on how often one uses the trailer or has the equipment like Peter 315. Since I seldom use my trailer anymore, I leave the battery in the garage where it gets charged now and then, using a Battery Tender.

I don’t use mine very often so I take it out and leave it on my work bench on a trickle charger.

Same here, it lives on my shed workbench attached to a 10w solar charger I salvaged from an old solar fence charger. I only install it in the trailer when I use it (not much anymore). During the winter I also have my deep cycle from my current fence charger and my mower battery attached to this same 10w charger and come spring everything is still charged and ready for use. My Ford truck has a separate fuse and relay for the charge circuit/pin on my 7 pin and it charges the battery when trailer is in use.

I leave mine installed, and use a trickle charger.

Mine all charge from either of the trucks or the Suburban. I replace the batteries every 2-3 years as they need it. All of my trailers except the camper are pulled fairly often, so they get charged pretty frequently. Of course, I just took the little battery off the car trailer and put a group 27 Combo battery on it because I added a winch.

I put a solar panel on mine. It keeps the battery up all summer. In the winter the battery comes in the basement and on a float charger, along with the batteries for anything that won't be used over the winter. The brake battery is load tested at the beginning of each season and replaced if necessary.
