Hi Folks:

It's about time to clean up the engine compartment a bit. Does anyone know of an environmentally-friendly bio-degradeable engine degreaser that works well? I want something that is actually OK to just hose out in the backyard without causing it to become a toxic waste site! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Any suggestions appreciated...

Simple Green oughta do the trick but will it neutralize the toxic wastes you're gonna wash off with it? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Sedgewood,

Good point...I would hope that what I'm hosing out includes several gallons of water, maybe a pint or so of simple green, and less than an ounce or so of oil? This is something to think about though....maybe a trip to the DIY carwash is in order, eh?

Didn't mean to rain on your parade - in fact its something that never even occurred to me 'til now. Yeah, the car washes deal with it all the time.

While I agree that we need to be environmentally responsible, I wonder if there is really any significant impact from the task you are describing. Once the oily gradoo (in relatively small quantities) has been emusified by the detergent and thoroughly diluted and dispersed, is there really any harm done? Particularly one individual doing one machine, what, once a year? I don't know the answer to this but I suspect your exhaust fumes are doing more harm than this would.

Just one man's opinion.

I'm sure you're right, however, it is fun to be as 'clean' as possible to the environment, especially if you have well water or live near an aquifer. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As always, MR, a well-reasoned and practical response. So, should I stop letting my engine oil drain out in the back yard? The kids really like the slippery grass. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
