Well, if you have managed your mowing chores with a 42" Craftsman for the last 10 years, what are you really expecting out of a new mower? Sounds like you have the desire to beat the crap out of a $5000 mower rather than a $1500 one. You will probably do just fine with a x300 series or comprable Husqvarna and then put the cash into the tractor you've always wanted that won't do well mowing.

I have a x540 (liquid cooled) mower for the front and side yard where the family plays mostly and a 3038e for the bush hog box blade loader finish mower woods maintenance work.

Having two separate purpose machines helps wear and tear on both you and the equipment. In my opinion.

Fix the sears mower up with a great suspension seat and buy the tractor you are dreaming about. Then get a new garden tractor later.
