Weird weather this year. May has always been warm (70-85) but we had snow several times this year, including Memorial Day.
Last few days have been more like normal, so time to work on porch/deck.

Hi Bo. Yes, totally weird weather this year in Arizona. We were up at the Ranch over the Memorial Day weekend too, and were driving out during the snow on Monday morning. It's amazing how slick the roads get with just the tiny amount of precipitation. I've seen them much worse in the past, but it's always fun driving down the road sideways!

Looks like a good start on your porch. Keep the pictures coming. We always enjoy them.

Bo, I was wondering what the extra bracket is for on the far right joist hanger? I don't have a ton of deck experience.

It’s a DTT2Z tension tie. The engineer calls for one on each end of the deck. It requires a through bolt (going through the block) vs. the redheads holding the ledger board. Something to do with shearwall.

I picked up my 6X6 beams today, and started to set the first one. Easy with the tractor!

I have not secured it at the bracket yet and was wondering if the beam in the metal bracket is fine or should i slip a 6x6 piece of shingle under the beam?

I just bolt them into the brackets. The brackets that I've used all have enough space under the post to allow drainage and air flow, which is the most important thing for stopping rot. What would the shingle accomplish?

I have always been told to put a layer of shingle on top of or next to the concrete block before putting PT wood against it. I put some behind my ledger board to keep the PT lumber from reacting with the concrete. I guess the steel bracket provides that separation. Just curious as to whether it would help with the bracket, or actually cause a problem.

Leave the gap like Eddie said. It is intentional to avoid direct contact and water/rot problems with the end grain of the post

Okay, I will skip the piece of shingle. Meanwhile I got the other 4 upright beams done today. Next is the horizontal 4X10s.

Posts look good. I think this is going to be a huge, and really nice, change to your entrance. Are you going to notch your posts to hold the beams?

I am not a huge fan of notching. I am going to use APA brackets and through bolts. (APA is the ornamental version of the A bracket). Either one is probably enough but I am going to do both. I have overbuilt most everything in the house, why not the deck, too?

Looking great Bo. I like to trowel the cement to be a convex, to be a bit higher in the center and taper to the sides to shed water easier.

Hey, before secure this 4x10 to the uprights, do you all put any slope in your decks? I was thinking about 3/4 of an inch at 10 feet. I hear some people say more and some say none.

I don't know, but have to ask, What type of deck floor are you building? If wood across joists, which direction do you want to run the deck boards?
