I saw you posting on MotorSeven's log cabin build, so I found your's and just finished reading all of your's up to date. Awesome build! Those are enormous logs, reminds of Lincoln Logs from when I was a kid, well a kid in linear years anyway :laughing:

Your patience is miraculous. I can not believe a Western building department could be so incompetent and outright pathetic, no one should have to go through what you have had to suffer. It is terrible to think that is where your tax dollars go....

Keep the pics coming, I am looking forward to seeing the finished product!

I like your stove! You got one with the window in it, and it looks like it will warm the whole house on a cold night. One thing is for sure you will get a lot of heat from that flu pipe as well. I made sure that when I installed my flu it had a section of single wall before it went into the ceiling- I live in a single story home. You were able to utilize multiple to scavenge as much heat as possible from your stove. Corner placement was brilliant as it frees up space in your home.

The place is starting to take shape and it shows. I am sure you spent many night's losing sleep over "every aspect" of this project. Those sleepless nights have paid off, and soon you will enjoy the fruits of your labor. You deserve it!!

Thanks again for keeping us (TBN in the loop)- I have felt your frustration, your excitement, and your sorrow... Hang in there as you will enjoy many years in your brand spanking new home, warrantied by the builder!! That sucker is there to stay....

Heat shields are mounted "on the stove" with 1" - 2" long standoffs. The air between the stove and shield is much hotter than the surrounding air, therefore it continually rises due to convection and is replaced with cooler air.

You should be able to lay your hand on the shield and not get burned.

I'm getting down to the wire. On a flight back from San Antonio yesterday I reflected on this whole process. I'll have to say it has been WAY harder than I anticipated. I think in my frustration I have often blamed the County more than I should have. True, I think there is too much regulation, but it is what it is and I'm starting to realize that they are people who for the most part are trying to help. I have enjoyed the building part, but I'm not cut out to be a contractor. Way too much red tape for me. I now think contractors earn their money. It's probably not easy being an inspector either. There's probably always people trying to cut corners. So I'm sure there will be some more frustrations before this journey winds down, but I just need to look at them from everyone's angle instead of just mine.

That's really big of you, good man for thinking it over and trying to see the other viewpoints. I agree that contractors earn their money.

Still, the county there has put you through a lot more than what is required in about 90% of the country. I'm not saying they did it out of spite, just that the system you have there is broken. But you made it work anyway, that is huge, speaks good of you.

What kind of person would suggest all of those dumb rules and regulations that had a decent brain in his head !!!! I've been following your thread and I can't even recall all the stupid rules that you came up against, but I remember thinking that it was just crazy. I'm all for following building codes, but the stuff you had to do was just nuts. Somebody should find a way to change things in your county......this is America......we have too many dumb laws already !!!!!! I've really enjoyed watching your progress......great job !!!!!

Progress report: yesterday we finished screwing the drywall in the bathroom, downstairs bedroom, laundry room, kitchen, and hall. This morning I had my "screw inspection". The good news is he passed what we got done and said we could mud. The bad news is that the code says I have to drywall all the ceiling if there is liveable space above. We were just going to do the bathroom and bedroom ceiling, mostly for soundproofing. But now I have to cover the kitchen, dining room, hall, and even the underside of the stairs, for fire protection. Bummer. I really wanted that open beam look and the Tongue and Groove from the floor above to show. Big disappointment!

And I'm still at odds over the upstairs. I stubbed out plumbing and electrical for future bath and they are trying to say I have to do it now. Ain't going to happen. This one I'll use an attorney to help me if necessary.

Well, I'm off to Home Depot to get more drywall (85 miles one way).
