Thanks guys ALL the information you have posted is helpful.

Was going to start on it this morning - but a family members 1997 S10 showed up dumping coolant and it appears to be a failed gasket at the pump/ block interface, it's their only transportation , so I have to fix it first.. Hopefully get back to the Ford 7.3 in the next few days

Thanks again, I do appreciate it:thumbsup:

Seems to me I remember wiring harnesses and relays associated to injectors and glow plugs along with the glow plug timer.

Chris

The g plugs are easy to test and replace, bar any rusted in problems. I think that if you get a test light to ground (-) on the wire connection on the g.p. it is bad, but check that out, it's out of my memory guaranty period. I believe that the fuel system is 100% mechanical and not involved electrically at all. (other than the fuel solenoid)

Yep that is one test method that I saw online, making sure to disconnect the one being tested..

hopefully get to the 7.3 in the next couple days Thanks again for the info

OK- got the F-250 pulled up to the garage and powered up the electrical system the wait to start light is not coming on with the Key switch turned to the ON position, and no voltage is present at the glow plugs (temperature is low 50s today).
Anyone know where the solid state glow plug controller is mounted ??

Back in '04 I bought my '99 F350 with 7.3, I think it had around 40k miles on it when I bought it, if I remember correctly.

After a few years, my father started realizing how much nicer it was to plow his parking lot contracts with my heavy diesel truck and 9' plow vs his older half ton and 8' plow. He slowly started "stealing" my truck from me, it took a few years, but I eventually officially sold it to him a couple years ago.

Here is what it looked like for the first few years that I owned it...

Then a few pics during the "transition years" of when my father was stealing it from me....

And what it looks like as of last week....

I mostly only use it now for towing the tractor when needed, and since we live so close together, we still sort of "share" the truck. If he ever wants to get rid of it, which I doubt he will, I'll buy it back from him. I keep thinking that someday when it's all rusted out, maybe I'll want to restore it. As much as I did love the truck when I owned it, I don't miss the harsh ride. I could barely drink a cup of coffee when driving that truck, without spilling the entire thing all over the place.

Here is a pic of it with around 3k lbs in the bed, it's the only time it looked pretty level.

'97 that dad bought new. I bought it from him in '10 with 110k miles and stock. Dumped the D50 for a D60 with a True Trac diff. Then installed a BTS trans (look it up, best e40D / 4R100 trans money can buy, Banks Intercooler and chip with Tony Wildman tunes. Also did a custom e-fuel.

Next step will be injectors, if I keep it. With a new grand baby really need a crew cab.

Thats what I have been planning on, It's expensive but more than likely the last trans I would ever have to buy.

To be honest it really is not that expensive. Ford reman is in the 3k+ range and it is NOTHING like a BTS. If you go there Brian and his crew will do the install for basically nothing and it will be right. He builds the trans in front of you and in my case entertained alot of questions. This trans cannot be called a rebuild because it is all new and custom parts except for the case. He takes about half of the new Ford pump parts and throws them out in favor of custom parts. And he will more than likely buy you lunch. Brian and Patti [his wife] are great people. As far as his warranty, I was one of the few that had a problem. His first question was "are you still running" and the truck was just the converter [not his parts] was messed up [dragging] so he sent me a new trans/converter/oil cooler and oil on his dime with no confirmation other than my word. THEN wanted to pay for my time to install it. So no worry about him standing behind his work. CJ

I have used a couple.... All '00-'01. The '01 was a F450, the '00 was a F250. The F250 was nice. Stock, and I only drove it empty.

The F450 was great; had 12' flatbed with dump. It was construction truck for buddy I worked for, for a couple years. Towed Bobcat with it, hauled light to maxxed out load in bed. He sold it due to change in business.

He has a '01 F350 SRW now. He beats the snot out of that truck. Broke fron springs, had to replace whole front axle(bbad bearing took out case), is on 2nd replacement bed(loads the snot out of the lumber rack; sheet metal aint like it was decades ago...), and replace the tranny(yes, Ford tranny's go out too, not just Dodge).

The 7.3 in that truck keeps humming though; he is over 375,000 miles. He got it with over 125,000.

For as much as I liked that '01 F450 flatbed, I still like the power band of the inline motors. Same in fire engines; I have driven inline with the newer rigs we have, and V8's in the older(CAT and Detroit). Just like the way the inline motor pulls.

Will give 7.3 credit though, I know my construction buddy noted above, drives the snot out of his(he does keep filters, fluids changed regularily though). It keeps on running.
