We have a Cub Cadet 6284D with the Cat diesel.

In cooler temps, it's very hard to start. It turns out the glow plug controller is a simple 5-second timer; below freezing that's not enough. You have to play with the key switch and get the glow plugs to cycle 2-3 times before it'll start.

Is there an automatic (temp-sensitive) glow plug controller available for this machine? Or would we be better off replacing the timer with a manual switch (like old IH farm tractors)? We previously had a 5234D that started way easier.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a 6284 also but haven't had it long enough to offer much help. Although I did start it several times when below freezing with little or no trouble.
I did have the heater ( hose type) plugged in for about .5 hours before starting.
My previous Cub ( Daihatsu diesel) started pretty well below freezing but it had a heater also. I usually cycled the glow plugs several times prior to starting.
I should know more real soon how the 6284 will do....
