I believe that was the OP's concern, i.e. what's gonna break if the mower encounters resistance, such as a rock or ground contact.

The shear pin, but only if someone didn't do something stupid, like replace the OEM pin with a grade 8 bolt.

Got a soft spot in my heart for the older Ford 8000's we got ours in 1968 brand spanking new, full rack of front weight and a large stack of rear wheel weights along with a 5 bottom 18" moldboard plows with the hydraulic side hill hitch (2 point) semi-mounted.
And she's still on the farm and even gets used a bit.

Mom's old brush hog had a round shaft, round sleeve, and a single bolt through it between the PTO input and gearbox. I'm not sure if it was intended as a sheer or not. However, over the years the two parts were rusted together and no longer capable of breaking loose.

You’re supposed to remove the bolt to lube and exercise the two halves each year, as part of your routine maintenance.

That's the way my 6' King Cutter is made. I use grade 2 or plain ½" bolts, which cost #1 each, plus a 35 cent nylok nut; great shear pins.
