I recently purchased a John Deere 1530 diesel and have been going through it. The tach / speed gauge was smashed and the drive cable missing from inside the sheath, so I got new parts. However, when I insert the cable into the mounting hole in the bell housing, it does not engage anything. Is there a serviceable drive gear? I assume based on the location that the cable should be driven by a gear that's driven by the flywheel teeth, am I on the right track?

Tach drives usually drive off the front of the engine, never heard of any that drive off a flywheel. Call your local JD dealer and ask them, maybe you'll get an answer, maybe not.

Tachometer on JD utility tractors built from '65-'75 are driven from rear of the engine camshaft via a driveshaft. Numbers in footnotes refer to numbers marked on camshaft.

You know better than I do and I believe I stated that. OP stated the flywheel and I've never heard of any tach drive off the flywheel.

I fail to see where you stated I knew better than you.
Tach drive on these model JD utility tractors attaches to flywheel housing therefore I understand why ftyarker thought tachometer was powered by the flywheel.
