I am most likely buying a used 2021 Kioti DK6010. I can get a new Kioti backhoe with a $1000 rebate bringing the price down to $9000. I am wondering, is this the best way to go? Is there a really good aftermarket backhoe that I should consider that will save me a decent chunk of change? The 2021 DK6010 clearly has warranty left on it. does that get affected by using 3rd party implements?

Do a google search for Woods backhoes. Not sure of the pricing though. I would personally go for the Kioti backhoe, it has a better chance of being matched to the machine and if you have problems with it you are just dealing with one manufacturer. Tends to make things easier.

You definitely want to buy a backhoe with a subframe that is meant for your tractor! Stay away from 3 point hitch type backhoes.

Just my 2 cents.

Make that 4 cents.

Or go ahead and make it a dollar..... I know there are at least a 4 dozen tractor owners right here on TBN with experience on tractor mounted backhoes.

And BTW, if you do find a decent subframe-mounted hoe and it is compatible with your tractor, you are going to be pleasedwith the decent work it can do when the digging is medium or easy.
But even used, I would expect a subframe & hoe in good working order to go for $3K or up, not $1K.
luck,

At $9000 for a new Kioti backhoe - this will probably be the most expensive implement you purchase. I would want to be certain that you have $9000 worth of work to be done. You can purchase a whole lot of other good, used implements for that amount of money.

That's a hell of a price to pay - just for being able to say you have one.

I have a decent amount of work to be done but that is mostly in the early stages of the land clearing prepping. This would be things like trenching for electric. Trenching for well pipe. Digging out a septic field. Digging out a hill for a walkout basement. Digging out footings for foundations. Trenching for the runoff on a 600 ft driveway. At some point I'll be adding some other structures on the property that need foundations. I might even pick up some work on the side just for fun if I haven't gotten sick of being in a tractor if that is a thing. Lol! If I run out of projects I imagine I could probably sell it and recoup a decent amount of $$$ for it. Beats renting and excavator for $400/day plus $200 for delivery and pickup and I can take my time if I need to and not rush to get things done before it has to go back.

Oosik, that is the probably the most near-sighted argument I've heard yet for buying a backhoe or not. Do you see that in making the assumption that price is the most important thing to you - that you are also saying the same is true for everyone? That simple expense is the most important aspect of ownership?

But I'd argue that's not the case at all. If it was, we would all use shovels and nobody would own a tractor or any implement. Maybe only basic hand tools if that. And everything we owned would be used & repaired.

For most, there are lots of things are more important than the price. Free time to do projects is probably what most people are short on. That, coupled with age and and simple physical ability.
All real strong reasons for a backhoe.

Being able to continually adjust the backhoe boom swing and outriggers from the loader operator seat for balance a must for my hilly property for safety. This is not easy for some tractor mounted backhoes.

Time is a big factor in my economic justification for equipment.

For the same money you could get a used construction backhoe. Bigger, stronger and probably never wear out. Pros and cons to every situation.

Years, decades ago a mini ex would have been useful for the many building and farm projects. Just not as common back then.

They have improved over time but generally not impressed with ag tractor backhoes.

Ya know that this is one of the big reasons for me buying some of my equipment. There is some pride and value in saying you did something with your own bare hands. People have done that for centuries and we admire that but what price did they pay? Just because you can do something doesn't mean it is smart to do. I know I can do a lot and save money but I also value feeling well into my later years and busted up joints and muscles doesn't sound very appealing. Heck, I've got enough aches and pains now and I've still got a decent number of years to go before retirement age.

As for time? Well, time is at a premium. You can't make more time(well, maybe by staying healthy and not doing stupid stuff). You can make more money. And if you don't take care of yourself you get neither.

Used minis is an option but for $9000? That must be one of the truly minis. I'll have to take a look and see what is out there. I've only really looked at the bigger minis. What size mini would be equivalent to a tractor backhoe?

Mini ex are double the cost but can dig twice as fast. Quick to back fill. Probably why old construction backhoes are cheap. Like to have one but don’t own one. Have used one and wishing I had something like it 40 years ago. The two TLBs I have now meet my needs.

People make a living with Mimi exs. . Not so much with tractor mount BH.

Have to up mechanic and operator skills to use to economically justify more expensive equipment. Excavation and land clearing tough work. You are the one investing for your education. Let us know how it works out.

Water line in my area is 6 ft deep. If you get a 9 ft backhoe you are going to be moving a whole lot. Same for footings if you need to get 4 ft or more. 9 ft just isnt much reach at all.

Electric is usually 2 ft, so not a problem.

That said, the excavation company that did our house foundation wanted $4000 to dig 310 ft of electrical trench. That was an easy $4000 I saved by doing it myself. It definitely adds up.

You have a mini ex in your profile pic. Is that what you used or are you talking tractor backhoe?

Unless you’re retired and want to spend a LONG time doing that a tractor backhoe isn’t where I would be. A construction backhoe is way better than a tractor backhoe and an excavator is way better than a construction backhoe.

A mini x will out pace a tractor backhoe by more than 2x. I have a Kubota KX-40 and I’ve had a L3240 with a backhoe, a M59, a Deere 310 and a Deere 410. The mini makes the M59 look silly. And the M59 was a good backhoe for what it was. The Deere 410 could out muscle the mini not surprisingly since it weighs twice as much and it could probably dig a basement faster since the bucket was twice as big but when it comes to just doing regular stuff the mini could hang right with if not exceed the 410 while being more pleasant to operate and burning 1/2 the fuel. I’d vote the 40 to be at minimum 5x more productive than a tractor backhoe if not more.

The amount of work you have to do lends me to think you would be better served buying a larger machine, if you can afford, and then selling it when you are done.

Did think about it but backhoe work is only part of the work needing to be done. No way can I own both a tractor and mini at the same time. And it isn't like I can do all the backhoe work first and then the tractor work after that. It's alternating and renting is just stupid expensive in my area. I've probably traded 9-10 months of payments on a tractor with a backhoe for the 3 weeks I've rented a mini ex. and still have a ton of work to do. Not to mention I had to take vacation from the day job so I can use the mini-ex for the week. That is a cost too that I didn't factor in. That probably doubles the cost of the rental.

Yeah. I don't disagree. I'd love to have a mini ex at my beck and call. It just can't happen. I don't think I would get approved for the cost of one. Then there is the other work I need to get done. A tractor with the right implements is going to get that done faster and more accurately then a mini ex. at a lower cost for the equipment. I'd perform one task quicker and another task slower. it might just balance out in the end from a time perspective. Having a mini and a skid steer would be the ideal solution but that is even more of a pipe dream.

If money is tight it’s hard to beat the versatility of a full size construction backhoe. You can buy a pretty nice one for 30k and a tired but still workable one for half that. Get all the construction work done with it and then buy a tractor that’s more practical for ongoing maintenance.

By 'construction backhoe" are you talking about a backhoe loader like this?
