Generator Selection?

My biggest problem with the tractor powered generators is the rain associated with a power outage. I had (about 35 years ago) a PTO generator but it could only be used outside in good weather, I now have a stationary dedicated generator for the house. (I've not checked to see if the newer ones have this limitation.)

Mine has been used in numerous rain and snow storms over the years with no issues, I do have a piece of plastic over the control and connection panel,
I have considered putting a calf hutch over the generator.

Same here, it's a non issue...

I never have figured out why folks pay the bucks to house a dedicated generator, but they always tell you about how the pto generator is in the back of the barn somewhere, next to impossible to get out and use...

There's no reason a pto generator can't be housed near your house, in an enclosed cabinet with all the wiring there, ready to be plugged in, or to just leave it plugged into a transfer switch, just like a dedicated genset...

With portable generators and bad weather, check out GenTent. They build tents for generators that are supposed to stand up to just about any kind of weather. I have one on my Honda.

I know a guy that has his in a shed, fastened down near the outside wall with a hole in the wall for the PTO shaft. He must have made up a longer shaft. Pretty obvious but clever.

Potential ship date now of Thursday the 8th for the transfer switch. If it happens, I should have it next Tuesday or so.

Not shipped. No explanation.

Called blue box store again last week and they didn't know why the transfer switch didn't ship. They called G again and got a new ship date of the 15th. It's now late on the 16th and still no ship.


I called G and got someone who was willing to call blue box store and 'get their permission' to talk to me since I'm their customer, not G's. Once done, G now tells me early next week, but can't say for sure when.


At least I'm getting people in the States when I call both places and not somebody off-shore somewhere.
