Rounded off drain plug

Did we finish deciding on the toolbox, garage (barn/workshop) and electrical upgrades required before tackling any project of this complexity?

First thing would be to turn it over to the recommended position for tightening:

Less likley to break the adjustable jaw.


Then use a 3' long cheater pipe on it.

Ya got that backward. The wrench throat flexes open some when you pull against the moveable jaw. You are more likely to round off the bolthead.

Almost thought I'd be adding a Part Two to this thread.

First try on getting my hydraulic fluid drain plug out ended in a slip and partially rounded point or two. Used an adjustable wrench that didn't quite have enough grip for the factory installed plug. Second attempt with a pipe wrench got no where. Third attempt with a bigger pipe wrench got no where. It was a hex head plug, but thinner than a bolt head and I wasn't sure I had a socket big enough. Finally dug around in enough places to find a 30MM which fit nice and snug. But the 1/2" ratchet did nothing.

Resorted to the 1/2" x 12" breaker bar. Reefed on it to no avail at first. Changed positions and gave it another go. At first nothing, --- then SNAP. Thought sure I'd busted something, but it turned out it was just the plug breaking loose. Spun out nicely from there with no further issues.

I had the quick attach lever on FEL on my Kubota stuck engaged (part of back pain problem I am working through).. I went back to shop and located a 4' pipe that would fit over the lever, put it on, moved it gently and pop, no problem. Daughter asked if I needed 4' cheater, I said, I was only going back to shop once and that is what I found quickly. I always worry when using cheater that I will get hurt when whatever is stuck comes loose. Perhaps left over from teenage years when I was a skinning kid that often resorted to cheaters.

I have a Spanish-speaking friend who is learning the English names for tractor components, tools, etc. I'll say something like BFH then see a ??? look on his face.

I've learned that saying 'fuerza brutal' (brutal force) to describe a breaker bar, cheater pipe, impact wrench etc for a second attempt on anything gets a big laugh out of him every time.

What I was told over 60 years ago in high school shop class, was with the pressure point farther up the moveable jaw, it is more likley to break the jaw:

I don’t think there will be a problem either way without the cheater pipe. When the cheater pipe comes out you should probably get a socket and breaker bar or impact gun.
