When the pipe wrench fails ....
Perhaps this has already been mentioned

This is the longest thread I have ever encountered without a conclusion. And over a pipe plug!

Obviously it's more important to us than to Kando that the drain plug gets removed. Or perhaps some of us just have too much time on our hands.

Yes, that was suggested earlier in the year. I don't understand why you didn't reperuse 1048 posts before suggesting it. :D

What I was told over 60 years ago in high school shop class, was with the pressure point farther up the moveable jaw, it is more likley to break the jaw:

That is also what I was taught.

I work 2nd shift 7 days a week, it's cold outside and I'd have to bring the tractor out of the barn to have a suitable workspace with enough light to see.

Beyond that I've been tinkering on the 5000 i got. Changed the temp sender, coolant, engine and trans oil (water in the trans, eck) and next is replacing the exhaust manifold and muffler.

Again, we need a tongue in cheek icon.. (and maybe a slipping pipe wrench icon)

Sounds like the 5000 needs your attention anyway. In just 10 days the days start getting longer anyway. :)

Nice. I love those old Fords and am still toying with the idea of bringing my father's old gas 4400 (industrial) home. My brother keeps saying that we should sell it; running, we'd be lucky to get $4000 out of it. In current condition, it hasn't even been started in 4 years we'd be lucky to get a grand for it.
Either way it's worth more than that to keep around for the occasional use when I need a bigger tractor; maybe I'll put the cab on and keep it for plowing.

My vote is to have a mechanic or plumber acquaintance stop out and remove it. Until you've done it, the whole process is foreign and just invites you to dig a deeper hole. We've all been there and once you watch it being done you'll be a pro.

True. But pulling backward as in the 2nd pic tends to open the jaw slightly as the wrench flexes causing it to slip easier, rounding the head at a lower delivered torque.

Held like the first picture in your right hand it’s easily adjustable. Held like the second picture it’s kinda clunky. IMG_0876.JPGIMG_0877.JPG

Digital gauges and digital calipers especially ones that see infrequent use are always dead when you need them.

If this plug does end up getting welded out what kind of welder should we use. I’d probably use my mig so what shielding gas would be optional and should we use flux core. After all these decisions are made and assuming we have decided in the type of plug which sealant is best?

How about tire pressure gauges? Stick, dial, digital, oh boy!

You just dont seem to be properly prepared to do any repair work. Tools, shop, lighting, etc...Have you considered a nice apartment downtown? :p
