You all couldn't help yourself and blew it. #1000 was reserved for Kando to share his triumph!

Long before this post turns 2000 I will take up a collection so that somebody can go out to Indiana and help him out.

Firstly, I really don't have anything against pipe-wrenches per-se. They are bulky and unbalanced for the angle that Kando needs to get at the stripped drain plug though. He's tried a pipe-wrench without success.

Secondly, you yourself (in self-confessed boredom) have demonstrated that a vise-grip or a Knipex should 'do the job'. Both of those more 'modern' tools lock onto the rounded surface and are lighter and a heck of a lot less bulkier when it comes to manoeuvring it into position.

I, myself, don't own a pipe-wrench as my set of Aussie "Best-grip" perform the same function... plus I can use them in a number of different situations including a ratcheting motion without having the readjust the jaw.

"Same function"?
You can remove a seriously thread rusted coupling on a 2" dia. piece of galvanized steel water pipe with the Aussie "Best-grip"?
I think I gotta get an Aussie "Best -grip"

That's an interesting tool. If it always work as easily as they show it would be worth the $52 they sell for.Stud Remover Kits (Of course I always break them off at the head)

Put a drop of Kroil on nasty things before you take them apart. Let it sit if still stuck. I do and haven't snapped anything off on rusty farm equipment in maybe three years.

Over 100 PAGES about a dang drain plug? Maybe we need a GIANT week long blizzard to give people something to do (like me).

My vote is for KROIL !!!!

Liquid Wrench and WD40 are what I have always had around. I am not sure his method of rusting is real world enough, his results were not that different from turning the bolts off dry. Well done video, however. Just my $0.02

Here’s his test results. My experience is if you were to take those nuts off with a ratchet using any form of oil makes a BIG difference. I doubt there was much rust in the threads. It would have been interesting if he removed the nuts completely. IMG_0845.JPGIMG_0846.JPG

I don't see why I wouldn't be able to... along with the 'kit' (4 increasing sizes) I also bought a large one that would handle that size. The gripping principle is similar to that of a pipe-wrench without having to do the 'adjust the jaws' step.

A wee bit of 'your choice' of penetrating spray/oil prior to the job would always help.

The only/largest one (Aussie) that I can find shown on the internet is actually called "Better Grip", and is 16" long.
I think it very unlikely that any 16" long wrench, of any style, would separate an internally rusted coupling from a 2" pipe.
Is there a 24" or 36" long "Better Grip" model?

I just trudged out to the shed and measured the largest one that I bought and, yes, it's the 16". With the jaw fully open (spring loaded/tension) I could attach it to something 2.5". As to if there are larger ones, I don't know as I only purchased the largest that I could imagine ever using and I haven't used the 16" on anything yet. (But I have it!) I have used a couple of the ones in the kit from time to time and they do work as advertised as a wrench/ratchet.

That is a nice looking wrench. Imagine saying schraubenschlüssel just to say wrench. Germans are interesting people, but their word salad bowl overflows. :)

schraubenschlüsel = wrench, and is composed of the words for "screw key", according to Google Translate.

I'm sure the Germans say it using far less letters. :D

Any test that rates wd40 as better than kroil....I tend to not believe any of the other results either

I agree, LD1. KROIL is effective even on galled stainless steel...if it's not galled too bad. Best stuff I've used in my 28 years of fixing other peoples screw-ups.

FWIW here are the four wrenches that live in a drawer next to my big bench vise - plus the 'bionic' toy I just found in a thrift store to try out.

It is very common to clamp a rusted bolt or something in the bench vise, then reach for one of the four wrenches to get a rusted nut off it.

The bionic toy doesn't go down as small as I expected. Maybe down equal to a half inch wrench. Anything that size and larger that is rusted may not come off with so little leverage. We shall see.
