Have a 1999 Cat D5 with the Mitsubishi engine.

Will someone give me some insight into RPM operating ranges?

Have been keeping it below 2100.......but don't know if it would be safe to go higher?

It has a forestry cage and that is what I'm using it for. Was pushing up stump in fire break today. Not as fast as a track hoe.........but then I don't have one of those.

Safe to run it full out. I always use the decel pedal when switching directions too.

Decel pedal drops it back to about 1500 or so. That the pedal set it back to there left me wondering whether the higher RPM was for only short term extra power?

No, it's to keep you out of trouble. Hit the decel and if you are pushing it should stop pretty quick.
