I picked up a Typhon Terror XVII from Ebay recently and was going to share my thoughts on the purchase and first hours on the machine. Thanks to everyone on this forum, especially MattB4 and Carl_NH who have posted a lot of info about this machine (or similar machines).
Purchase and Delivery
Purchased through MachineryAsia on Ebay. Made and countered several offers and then just waited. Within 48 hours I had several aggressive offers popping up and decided to go with this machine - mainly to get the 902 motor. $9,000 delivered (pre-tax) which I thought was a decent deal.
Purchase was made on October 29th, paid on the 30th and machine was delivered from CA to NC coast on Monday, November 10th. Very fast.
Delivery was painless, driver called 2 days before, day before, day of and 15 min out. He arrived within 20 min of his estimated original day and time. It was the next piece of equipment to come off. He lowered the trailer deck and I helped him install the ramps. Drove it off, handed me the toolbox and keys and left.
Initial Impressions
Very first thoughts on the machine is that it looks good, save for the peeling stickers (which I've removed anyway). The Kubota sounded great. Seemed well put together (welds, paint, hardware, etc.)
And the machine would get lapped by a sloth in a foot race. Incredibly slow. I knew that going in, but until you've got a nice walk with it, you don't realize how slow that actually is.
Machine is as smooth as the operator, and still learning where the right throttle is for various tasks. Controls are responsive, nice digital gauges, comfortable and adjustable seat (slide and back angle). Included floor mat is a little goofy, but it works.
Plastic on the seats is a royal PITA. Took the 15 minutes to remove the seat pads and cut off the plastic after cussing my way through trying to pull it off.
Center sticks (drive and blade) are pretty sloppy and loose. They all will sway and seem a bit cheap, although the upgraded foot pedals are nice. Haven't dug into that much but the blade stick can easily rub against the right track stick and inadvertently drop the blade. I'm sure there is a way to tighten this up, but that is probably my only real complaint.
Operation and Upgrades
Immediately set about pulling stickers, checking/changing zerks, etc. Such a random assortment of fittings, but I just grabbed an Amazon multi-pack of standard zerks and it worked fine. I think they were mostly M8 and M6 if I recall. Machine was pretty well greased, but topped everything off with fresh red.
Changed the hydraulic oil, pretty easy. Drained out, fresh Tractor Supply oil in and added several large magnets to the bottom of the tank as someone here suggested just to grab any metal shavings that might be in there. Didn't notice any, but the magnets were a few dollars. I've run the machine about 1.5 hours and next step is installing the hyd. oil filter and changing out the engine oil later today.
Pulled off most of the already peeling stickers. Threw on a few Kubota stickers lol
Dropped the included 16" bucket and installed a $90 bolt style quick release which took maybe 5 minutes. Super handy.
I had a Amazon ROPS tool basket that was intended for my Summit tractor but didn't fit right due to the arrangement. But it worked perfectly on this machine. Some padding and pipe clamps and I can store the included tool box and multiple other items on the machine. It does extend beyond the rear access of the machine but I'm rarely in a zero turn environment anyway. Having a dead blow, sawsall, large wrench, strap and other items on hand is great and there is no extra room in the machine. I am 6' and it is....comfortable. I could see it being cramped for anyone taller.
Already purchased a hook/claw and 8" bucket and I set about getting out 2 stumps that have been on my list. I was very impressed. Did exactly what I wanted it to do and as long as I got setup, blade down and mid-throttle it wasn't overly jerky or rough. The claw/hook is a great attachment for stumps and roots. Essentially one tooth instead of 3 or 5.
I'll update as I get some more time on the machine. And I've got a 3 pump 24hp 480 mini skid steer in route that I am super excited to mess around with, so I'll throw up my thoughts on that as well. ;-)
Thanks again to all the info shared by others.
