A backup camera for $50!!!!!!!!!!!

   / A backup camera for $50!!!!!!!!!!! #381
I just received and installed a Pyle PLCM44, 4.3" monitor. I got the smaller monitor as I do a lot of our snow clearing in the dark and wasn't sure how bright it might be in the cab. Its mostly for ensuring I don't run over any customers as our business opens in the morning and a few people always try to sneak into the lot before it is done.

I wired it in so it is always on with the key. I put it up above the mirror in the corner of the windshield, hopefully there won't be any glare so I can use it in the summer when tilling etc to make sure I'm not plugged up. I was going to mount the camera up on the under side of the cab, but with the small mounting tabs, I wasn't sure I could bend it down far enough. I ended up putting the camera under the back window. I was thinking the plus to this would be as it got dusty or dirty, I could just pop the window open reach out and clean the lense.

I have no idea why the photos turned sideways. Sorry about that. At least I can turn my laptop sideways. :banghead:

Have you used it enough yet to say whether the screen is big enough? I was debating whether the 7" screen would be a better choice. It would block a bit more window, but I wouldn't have to lean in and squint so much.

I haven't had a chance, other than putting the box blade on again. It seems very bright but I doubt it would be accurate enough to use to do work with. I'm just looking to make sure I'm not running over people in reverse or to see down the road behind me. I think it will be good enough to see if the cultivator or rake is plugged up with out turning around. I think if you are looking to use it to actually work with the 7" would be a better choice. My thinking was if I wanted to upgrade it the wiring is all run and a larger monitor is not too expensive. I will probably use this one until at least next winter, through the summer season until I find out. Crossing fingers no march snow storms this year.

Sorry to hear about your machine burning.

Some of the cameras you linked come with the cable to connect the camera to a monitor. The cable you need is a RCA cable. It is the same cable that is used to connect stuff to your TV. A gold plated cable would be best.

Here some info that may help you select a camera, espically the part on CMOS vs CCD.

I noticed some of those cameras you listed did not have many reviews. That does not mean they are bad but I would probably buy one that had a lot of reivews. Also look at the reviews for the customer submitted images. Someone may have a picture of the cameras picture so you can get an idea of how well it works.

I'm curious about having the camera on all the time. Since these were designed for backup cameras and as such, on for short periods of time, has anyone had a problem with them if used all the time? I mean used as a rear view and on all the time. Do they get hot or start loosing sharpness?

So far I've not seen any issue with mine, of corse I've only put 250 hrs on it in the last year.
