Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I would think a hydraulic side shift would be most useful for someone who mows a split rail type fence where you need to mow under, not just up to, the fence.

Other benefit of hydraulic side shift is if you have a narrow garage/barn door so you can center the mower.

Having the flail shifted is very useful for getting near objects but you don't need hydraulic side shift for that. I leave my Caroni TM1900 permanently shifted to the right. It only takes 15-20 minutes or so to shift it and unless you have one of the issues mentioned above, there really is no reason to ever have the flail centered. I have never shifted mine back to center in 8 years.

I keep mine centered as it covers both wheels, but still extends a bit to right and more balanced. Shifted to extreme it is useful in some areas but more tippy on uneven ground. Not a problem on the level. I will probably use centered more than 90%. For me it is an added convenience but not a necessity.

I wouldn't think a shifted flail would imbalance the tractor. The weight of the flail is largely on the rear roller and therefore very low to the ground, well below the tractor center of gravity. I mow on hills and haven't noticed any issue. Also if the tractor tipped, the flail "outrigger" would tend to stabilize matters.

Xfaxman, thanks for your help, quick reply and link. Glad I finally know what I bought!

I was looking a Messick's page and surprised the roller assy. bearing is listed as 25.4mm ID. Since this machine was manufactured before metric was used here. But I looked it up to cross reference it, and it"s 1". So they must convert all dimension on their web site to metric.

My roller tube is beat up pretty bad, but it will still do what I need, I think! I'm not paying $1000 for a new one. If it came to that, I could built one for peanuts.

Explain the adjustment holes (for the roller) and which hole is for what purpose....... Mine is now in the middle position. Thanks. len

You're welcome. Those holes change the cutting height. Sounds like you need an operator's manual.

I think the original color and the "I" stamped on the data plate might indicate it is an "Industrial" model.

My Caroni is usually offset. The only time I have to center it is on the trailer.

Sorry if I confused. Doesn't unbalance the tractor, but the flail itself as there is more hanging to one side. I do raise it to shift. Now if mowing across a slope I have notice a change in the overall balance, just enough to be mindful.

I'm considering getting the JD 390 flail mower with my new JD 5100m tractor. Is the tractor too much hp for that mower?
Max hp is listed as 75hp on the spec sheet. Any input would be appreciated

thanks

How are you intending to use the mower? Routine cutting of grass or pasture would be no problem. Not necessary to run at full PTO power. If you are intending to clear land then maybe not such a good match.
