The is my second flail mower. My first is a Vemvo 6 ft wide that I have had to do extensive repair to. Thats why i purchased this one. After cleaning off some of the dirt I did find a large 25 on the back side as two stickers.

Yyou can order replacement manuals for your flail mower from John Deere or your local dealer.

YOU are the proud owner of a JD 25A flail mower with 36 scoop knives which will give you a good over all cut in all conditions.
Your flail mower rotor can be equipped with the 36 pairs of side slicer knives if my memory is correct-my fathers 25A had 72 side slicers.

check for broken D rings and damaged scoop knives, Change the drive belt, change the oil in the gear box scrape and wash of all the rubber dust and grease out from under the V belt guard and be sure to grease the other fittings under the V belt guard.

Pump no more than six squirts of grease in the flail mower rotor bearing and 4 squirts in the rear roller bearings before you mow for 8 hours each time and have fun with your new to you toy.

Check with a local Deere Dealer and they will be able to tell you.

Your new to you flail mower is not that old that you cannot purchase parts for it.


If its like so many other manufacturers they simply mark each unit as
its built either as inventory or by order.

I'm looking at getting a flail mower. I've found a couple of used Alamo 74" Super Heavy Duty mowers.
I'm concerned about HP requirement.
I talked to a dealer about buying new, he stated I'd need at least 35HP PTO.
I looked at Alamo's website, 25-50hp PTO, that's kinda vague.
Alamo's Literature states for the 74" mower 35 Tractor HP Min, 43 Tractor HP Recommended.
Alamo's owner manual says 35 Tractor HP for the 74" mower.

According to Alamo I'm good to go, Ive got a 43 HP tractor that has a 33 HP PTO.

I plan on using it to cut a field that is over grown with Goldenrod a couple a times this summer. Then planting it with native grasses and forbs in the spring of 2017 and mowing with the mower raised to 6" to keep the weeds at bay till the plantings get a hold.

So I think a 74" mower should work for me. But the dealer made me nervous. I know that the 62" mower is OK but I have found some used 74" that are alot less than new. So I'd like to go with the 74". What says the wizards of Flail?

I have a 75" Caroni. It cuts just fine with a 41hp gross and low 30's PTO tractor. With any mower the power required depends on how thick the grass/brush is. In springtime with lush grass and first cut I need to slow down. In the summer and fall I can pretty much cut at whatever speed I'm willing to drive. I wouldn't worry at all about a 74" mower on a 43hp tractor.

Hello Weedy Fields. Second what Islan Tractor said. Also, the SHD74 is what I have and have no problems with mid 30's PTO HP. Curious as to which model you are looking at, the fine cut or coarse cut? Mine is the fine cut with 92 pairs of knives and I have cut some pretty tall and thick weeds with no problem.

Although I got delivery of my new flail a couple weeks ago, I just got it assembled:
Hydraulic Offset 78" FlailMower EFGCH+195 HD





Tomorrow I'll get some gear oil, grease it and probably a new top link.
In the AM I have a buyer coming for my old flail. Thinking a good use of the funds will be a 2nd function switch.

Hoochy, Some of both. I'm looking to get a fine cut one. I'd like to chop the grass/stems as fine as possible so they rot away as quick as possible.

To chop as fine as possible just travel slowly with a rough cut mower.
