I do all my own maintenance, and try to do all my own repairs. But I am finding myself walking away from equipment purchases because it has an engine.

3 Cars / truck
1 Diesel tractor
1 lawn mower
1 Riding lawn mower
1 Rototiller
3 chainsaws
2 no... 3 weed wackers
1 leaf blower
1 Quad
1 motorcycle
1 Generator
1 Pressure washer (I forgot this)

Just seems like too much sometimes. I am really questioning how often I change my oils. I do live in a humid / wet state for the most part, but everything gets used at least once every 6 months. I have been pretty religious about once a year oil change no matter the odometer or hours. But my mechanic friend (he manages all the machinery for a wildlife refuge) says I am in overkill, especially as I use a lot of synth.

I guess I am posting this to see what you guys do. This is not a judgement post, just an inquiry.

ps. I wrote the list then remembered 3 more engines.

Diesels:
4 Diesel tractors.

4 stroke gassers:
2 Autos (no truck - yet)
1 Generator/welder
1 Power washer
1 Splitter
1 Leaf-vacuum

2 stroke gas:
4 chainsaws (assuming I ever get the 036 back together)
2 string trimmers
1 leaf blower
1 snow blower

Too many, but I'd be hard put to cut any one of them from the roster.
The leaf blower could go without too much pain, but it's an Echo and always starts.
The snow blower is starting to age - and not gracefully ... replace with a blower attachment for the B2320?

1 Car
1 Truck
1 ATV
2 Diesel tractors
3 149 Cub Cadets
1 push mower
1 Stihl Kombi power head - trying to cut back here...
1 string trimmer
2 chainsaws
1 generator
1 dirt bike
6 motorcycles although half are 2 strokes

Brings the current grand total to 21 which I think is all of them at the moment. Most likely will add a pressure washer and UTV at some point in the next few years. I also do all my own maintenance, most of which works out to be annual stuff these days. Thankfully several of them are pretty low maintenance especially when used regularly.

Know what you mean, and I don't have that many engines. I try to avoid buying more things to maintain too.

2 cars
1 truck
1 tractor
1 rototiller
1 ride-on mower
1 push mower
1 useful 6500W generator
1 old 400w Winco generator I never use
1 brush cutter/string trimmer
2 chainsaws

Eleven total. I plan on selling one car this spring.

Way too many:

1 car - Subaru Forester new this year
1 pickup - Toyota Tacoma new this year
1 tractor - JD 870 diesel 17 years old
1 generator - tri-fuel, running on propane 17 years old
1 log splitter about 5 years old
1 walk behind lawn mower - Bowens about 25 years old
1 chain saw - Stihl about 25 years old
1 wheeled string trimmer - DR 15 years old
2 hand-held string trimmers - Toro and something else both over 20 years old
1 backpack blower - Stihl about 25 years old
1 mini-tiller - Garden Way (Troy Bilt's developmental brand) about 25 years old

12 in total.

I hate engine maintenance and try mightily to avoid buying anything that requires one. The two-cycle engines get no maintenance as log as they run, and if I can't fix it quickly I take it to my neighbor who is a wiz with small engines. I've changed the oil in the generator once in 17 years; the mower got fresh oil when we moved from NJ 17 years ago because the movers made me empty it; I don't think the oil in the DR trimmer has been changed in the 15 years I've had it, and the log splitter is "new" so not due yet by my schedule. The tractor gets to the dealer every five years or so for service, and the vehicles at least once a year because they need state inspections.

I count 37 by a quick list. No way that all of them run or are in service, only around 8 or 9 get run on a regular basis right now. Went through a phase of never meeting a free mower that I didn't like a while ago, it got kind of out of hand.

I would second the "too many" observation. I have a rich brother, who has owned 3 airplanes, a helicopter, multiple trucks, motorcycles and cars, and all the stuff that goes with it- all at once. He realized that it bothered him that he couldn't "take care" of his stuff (something we inherited from our father- a curse or blessing, depending) himself, and that bothered him, so he simply cut back here and there. Still has more than most of us, but then, he's rich.

It starts to get to " Who owns who".

To deal with the issue of oil changes as the OP mentioned, try synthetic and stretch the intervals. I used to change way too frequently until I switched to synthetic oil. in effect, I eliminate half my work because of the synthetic extended intervals. Works for me. :)

5 cars

After putting this list together I think I see why the wife says I need to stop collecting things. Maybe this was a bad idea to make the list.
