Critters captured on camera

Do the folks that actually believe in "bigfoot" not think that with all the (tens of thousands) game cameras set up over feeders, food plots etc...someone would have an real picture?...C'mon...!

C'mon….. /pine, use your head! There is not as much data as you think. Bigfoot eats hamburgers and Bud Light and who puts that in a feeder? Not tens of thousands.

Great pics Sodo! That's quite a collection of wildlife you have around you, nice.

ya know Dave…..?

As I looked thru this thread ……I guess I have it pretty good for critters, this is from almost 3 years of pics. Game camera's been a useful purchase, I have 4 of them.

The wildlife has been better neighbors than the other two fellas, but they don't "live in the area" for the time being. But they could be back in a year or so, hope they stay away from my place.

You make it sound like the other two fellas are going to get paroled in about one year. Were the rotten thieves at your barn in the pic?

My local wildlife is not too bad for variety. I don't have a game camera, so no pics, but this is what we have:
moose, white tail deer, black bear, fox, bobcats, coyotes, porcupines, beavers, snowshoe (varying) hare, grouse, turkey, some sort of weasel, skunks, raccoon, and groundhogs (woodchucks), toads, salamanders, frogs, skinks, small harmless garter and black snakes, and three million biting black flies--give or take a few hundred thousand.

There are probably some fishers (larger and meaner member of the weasel family) around, but I haven't seen one here yet, or scat that I could identify.

It would be something to see a cougar prowling through the woods--as long as I see him first.

Down here we call the cougar a panther. I have seen three of them in my lifetime. One of the light colored ones imported from Texas, and two of our famed Florida black panthers. But they are really a muddy brown color. My BIL raises gamecocks and he has chickens stolen where there are no blood or feathers left behind. He thinks those are taken by panthers.

And we go years without seeing a skunk. When I was a kid they were everywhere. Not sure what killed them all off.

Skunks are one of most common rabies carriers here, plus they can stink up your dog. During skunk mating season in spring, about when we get some relatively balmy air and snow fog that hangs low to the ground, the skunks can be smelled about everywhere from being hit in the road. They come inside our fence in the middle of the night digging for grubs in the grass in late summer. They leave little, shallow skunk divots behind from their digging.

I think there have been one or two confirmed cougar sightings in Maine, but I don't expect to get that lucky.

Snow cover is great for helping to know how much of what is around unless it is a hibernating critter.

Several years ago I did volunteer work with a wildlife rehab organization. The boss and I went to an area where a panther had been seen and took the materials for making molds of the cats footprints. After making copies of the footprints and never seeing the panther we decided to leave. As we were leaving we looked over at a clearing and saw the panther leaving. My only time ever seeing one.

I walked over to my shooting house to spread some corn and change out the SD card. The bucks are staying out of sight, even at night. They must have checked their calendar and seen bow season has started. I had seen a couple of blurry pictures of our fox squirrel before today, but these are the first good ones. He would come down and get a mouthful of corn, then go back up the tree to eat it. Note the size difference of him and the grey squirrel in the last picture. When I was a kid we would kill all fox squirrels if we could. It took two or three gray squirrels to equal the meat in a fox squirrel. Now they are protected and it is a big deal to see one of them.

Good pictures.

Last year there was a website set up to report fox squirrel sightings. I saw a few this weekend, first ones I've seen in years. I contacted the biologist at USF and they still want information. If you want to report the location let me know I will forward the email address.
You probably know that they are disappearing at an alarming rate and the species has been designated a " species of concern" and are protected.
