I put in a Water Boss I got from Menard's for $389 and it works just fine for us. A lot of this new technology seems like the magnet you put on your gas line to get better mpg on your car. UH-huh....right
The main thing to consider is getting a softener that regenerates on amount of usage not number of days.

I also mentioned the usage monitor type earlier and agree, don't get the timer based. I have an outdoor spigot I was cars with so on days with a lot of usage, it will regenerate. The other times it will skip several days. I have a family of 4 with 21 grains hardness and 200 lbs of salt last me about 4 months. You do need to know you hardness when setting up for the first time so it knows how much water it can soften between cycles. Again, $400 softener going on 6 years with no problems. I could buy 3 or 4 for the price of some of these proud brands that do the exact same thing.

I had my outside faucets bypassed for soft water. I'm not going to water the lawn or wash cars w/it. If I want to use softened water for something out side, I'll use a bucket.

I have two spigots right next to each other. One soft and one hard. I also fill my camper from that spigot. The other 2 locations are all hard water spigots only. I still chamois the car but soft water cleans better and will spot less. Why wouldn't you wash your car with it am I missing something? I probably use less water washing my full sized truck than I do in the shower.

It's not just about washing the car, it's all the other uses that you use water for outside that add up to a lot of water.....think about it. I really don't use it for the cars anyway because I always take them to the car wash.
I really don't need to waste treated water outside and have the softener regenerate more and dump more salt into septic field. But that's just me. To each their own. Whatever you feel is best for you.

... This kept coming up at the top of the list regardless of price.

Kenmore

That is the exact model I bought about 3 weeks ago. Just finished installing it last night.

I wasn't overly impressed with all the plastic parts in the inlet/outlet system, but we will see how it works.

I got mine on sale for $499 instead of the $599 regular price.

My 5 year old one went belly up a while back and the installer wanted $80/hour just to diagnose it, plus parts, plus another $80/hour to install the parts. A new timer would have been $250 on the internet, probably a lot more from his shop.

Replacement looked like the way to go.

Their site only says it is uses a citric substance to bind the scale - it says nothing about how it works,

snip the useless

at least not on their website.

Your still not reading, what did I suggest to the original OP, did I not say CALL THEM? If I didn't say it to you here ya go CALL THE COMPANY AND ASK THEM YOUR SCIENTIFIC DETAILS, I AM SURE THEY WILL DO THEIR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE YOU, and YOU would ask DEEP tech details from someone other than them themselves? I have a feeling that even if I were to "try" to explain it that you would scuff it off as "New Technology" that you would dismiss it simply because you do not understand it. I don't have your answers, I have what is on the website for YOU to go read! Perhaps they should post up all their research and plans and CAD drawings, just for you! Dude....YOU bring new meaning to the word "Arrogant" as you penned.

Nuvoh2o Co has a very fine product. I am not a shill, I have no relations. You do not have to lug around town and into your home tons of salt nor potassium over time, no plastic bags to dispose of and add to the enviroment, their is no electricity to burn, there are I think 5 mechanical parts, a filter, 2- O-Ring, a housing, a pressure release, so little to break. There is maybe 15% of the needed services of a plumber to install it! There is no backwash to poison the enviroment or the sanitary sewer systems. No fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle to go fetch salt or potassium. When it is time for a new filter you can have it delivered to your door, the change out can be done by a housewife! No storage area needed for salt either! The unit uses about 1- 30th the space needed for a conventional water softener system. The filter / cartridge changes are infrequent and inexpensive.
To not consider this "new technology" simply because it is new, and you do not understand it is beyond me! :confused2:

What kind do you have?
I too have an old one and after extensive research I decided to repair rather than replace. If yours is an Autotrol you might ant to consider keeping it.
Either way I recommend this fellow, he is truly amazing, excellent customer support. Send him an email and tell him what you are thinking.
I'm sure you will find that this is what customer service should be

Softenerparts.com Softener parts, repair your water conditioner with replacement parts for Fleck and Autotrol control valves:

This guy is great. I've been buying parts from him for my Kenmore softener for years now. When I buy a new softener it will be from him. I used to have to replace the drive motor on mine every couple of years. Maybe they've beefed them up as I haven't in a while. I even still have a spare from my last purchase.

Have you read the poor reviews out on the web about this company? You say it is a fine product but you don't own one? The $70 filter must be changed every six months and this will save me money? The plastic housing and a filter cost $700 up front. If this filter does indeed trap all the minerals, where do they reside since they don't get flushed out?

CurlyDave,
Just got mine hooked up about an hour ago. I agree about inlet/outlet system. That made things very difficult. How is yours doing so far?

Perhaps you didn't see my post, that isn't a basic back flushing water softener. New School it is...Call the NuvoH2o manufacturer Tuesday and flat
out ask them why theres is better then a "basic back flushing water softener".

I didn't see your previous post. Maybe we were typing at the same time. I didn't check out the NuvoH20 system but did take a hard look at the Pelican system. No salt, no back flushing, no water usage, no electric and a life time warranty. A perfect world. A bit pricey but with all of these features I would be have been more than willing to pay the extra money. Then I started researching salt-less water softeners regardless of brand. I didn't like what I read about the salt-less water softeners compared to those that use salt and back flush.
