The main thing to consider is getting a softener that regenerates on amount of usage not number of days.
I also mentioned the usage monitor type earlier and agree, don't get the timer based. I have an outdoor spigot I was cars with so on days with a lot of usage, it will regenerate. The other times it will skip several days. I have a family of 4 with 21 grains hardness and 200 lbs of salt last me about 4 months. You do need to know you hardness when setting up for the first time so it knows how much water it can soften between cycles. Again, $400 softener going on 6 years with no problems. I could buy 3 or 4 for the price of some of these proud brands that do the exact same thing.
