Without breaking the bank, need a heavy, max 8' wide wheeled disc for my Kubota 7040SUHD. What have you guys found to be the most reliable and effective brands/models? We have Domries out here--good reputation, very few on the used market and very expensive new.

Generally, anything and any brand over about 30 years old is a good buy. They are heavy, low-priced, "easy" to repair, and parts are usually available. You may need to replace some disc blades and a bearing or two but the repairs will never approach what a new disc would cost.

Unless you are in a hurry I'd check Craigslist in a reasonable radius to see what you can run across. Wait for a good buy.

The photo below is not a wheeled disc but the price was right - free. A friend wanted it off of his property when he bought his place.

I don't know about the "not breaking the bank" part but Athens Plow Co. makes a good disk. One of the members here just restored one:

I am sure the price of a new one would scare you to death:

If you can find a used one you can most likely get any part for it from Athens. I bought an old Athens 7 shank chisel and needed parts. They had all that I needed.

Most of the really old ones I see are pasture ornaments (worn out) but will still do a bit of work. When the disc blades are about 4-6 inches smaller than original, they need some $$$ thrown at them.

Be sure to price all the bearings and seals before you buy a clunker, it really adds up fast.

Wow--what an awesome restoration job!

And yes, the sticker shock of a new one is breathtaking. I've also noticed that used wheel discs are significantly cheaper in the Midwest than on the west coast.

Don't know what your budget is, but check with dealers. Sometimes they take wheel discs and other implements as part down payment on a new tractor. My dealer sold me a 13-ft Minneapolis Moline KS1300 tandem wheel disc (not an offset) he took in from a customer for $600 and delivered it to my place. I cut it down to about 8 ft so I can pull it with my Mahindra 5525.

Good luck.

This is a 9' JD that dad bought around 1970, was our main tillage unit. JD made a smaller model, if you can find one. We pulled it with a 58 HP 720D. ~~ grnspot

Apparently I need to preview my posts better. I intended for the second link that I posted to be this one: Athens Plow - Model 127/167 Pull-Type Offset Disc Harrow

As to the link to the project disk, he has not posted anything about using the disk. I think his tractor will pull it depending on the soil but it won't want anything else.
